I get the impression that the child doesn't exist in the book because all the confessors are dead except kahlan.

No, there is no child like that in any book. And ifI remember well, there were no male confessors alive at the time when Richard lived. All of them were long dead.

In the book series there was a large problem with Shota not wanting a male confessor to be born and it continues to the very last chapter of book ten in the series Hint:(Spoiler)

yes, Kahlan was the only confessor left in the books...no, male confessors had been long dead by the time Richard came around, and in the books there was no "water ritual" for the male babies....if I'm not mistaken the confessor would tell her mate to place the baby on a stone altar and decapitate them by placing a stick across the child's throat and standing on either end
