This is it, folks. Tonight's episode of Top Chef Masters will wrap up the preliminary stages of the Top Chef upgrade to determine the sixth and final contestant to compete in the champions round, where they will battle it out more or less the same way as the original Top Chef.
Tonight's episode will feature Hawaii's Roy Yamaguchi of Roy's, Chicago's Art Smith of Table 52, Michael Cimarusti of Providence in Los Angeles, and New York City's Jonathan Waxman of Barbuto. As usual, the chefs will compete for their respective charities. Smith will cook for Common Thread, Waxman, for Meals on Wheels, Cimarusti for the Grameen Foundation, and Yamaguchi for Imua Family Services.
On "Mystery Box," the quickfire challenge is reminiscent of season 3's Aisle Trial, where each contestant needs to prepare a dish using ingredients from one aisle in the grocery store. The elimination challenge, meanwhile, is very interesting, as the chefs draw another chef's name and must create a mystery box for that chef to prepare a meal with. Unfortunately for us, most of the contestants choose ingredients that they know their competitors will shine with.
Needless to say, there are already five chefs waiting in the champions round, including Hubert, Suzanne, Rick, Anita and Michael, who got 19 A½ stars the last time to win the fifth spot.
On that episode, the chefs were challenged to create a mini 3-course "meal" for 100 people, without any help whatsoever. The meal had to have an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert. Michael prepared shaved brussels sprouts and asparagus salad; pissed-off prawns with olive oil; twenty-year-old balsamic marinated strawberries with goat milk basil gelato and bittersweet chocolate creme fraiche.
