One minute John Krasinski is the leading contender to star in Joe Jonhston's The First Avenger: Captain America. Now? Not so much. The question of just who will be Steve Rogers is continuing to vex Marvel, with the studio committed to finding the right blend of heroic chops and cheap availability. But while the up-and-coming likes of Cloverfield's Mike Vogel are still in the mix, it looks like Chris Evans is also in with a chance.
Evans might seem to be a surprising choice, since he's still identified with another Marvel man, what with having played Johnny Storm in two Fantastic Four films. But Marvel's bosses seem to like him, and he's already read for the role. He's also a)capable of funny; b) a decent actor and c) really ridiculously good-looking, which would also seem handy for the role.
But don't go thinking there's a clear-cut winner yet: Vogel and relative unknown Wilson Bethel (of HBO's Iraq miniseries Generation Kill) remain on the list, while Krasinski, Chase Crawford of Gossip Girl, Smallville's Michael Cassidy and others appear to have been shown the door.
At this rate, it'll turn into a Captain American Idol competition, with the various finalists shoved onto a stage in costume to let comic book fans vote for their favourite via text message.
