Kate Gosselin tangoed her way to her and partner Tony Dovolani's best score of the season this week. However, the former Jon & Kate Plus 8 star's performance on Dancing with the Stars has been shadowed by reports of behind-the-scenes tension.
Gosselin has an important fan, though: Dancing co-host Tom Bergeron.
"There's all this drama that I keep hearing about," Bergeron told reporters at the College Television Awards, alluding to stories from US Magazine and PopEater. "The Kate that I meet, and the Kate that I hang out with backstage is sweet and self-deprecating and charming. I'm not seeing the other Kate."
Besides Gosselin, fellow contestant Erin Andrews has experienced her share of personal turmoil just four weeks into the competition. The ESPN reporter had to request increased security on the show after receiving death threats.
Bergeron had one small complaint about the heightened on-set precautions. "The cavity search I find a little bit annoying," he joked.
This season's crop of celebrity contestants may bring extra baggage, but Bergeron credits this group for the series' record ratings, which beat American Idol for the first time earlier this season.
"I think it's the cast," he said. "I'd like to say it's me, Brooke [Burke] and the judges, but I think it's the cast."
