Secret Diary of a Call Girl - Season 3: "Episode 1'' Review

Last week's revealing tell-all with the real 'Belle Du Jour,' Dr. Brooke Magnanti, author of the scintillating blogs and novels behind Secret Diary of a Call Girl, was an interesting half-hour of chat, but the meat of the premiere was promised to Monday's episode. "Episode 1" opened with Belle hard at work while revealing much of actress Billie Piper's impressive post-baby body. The sex was of the same type you'd see on any late night Showtime series, but the narration was what really brought Belle back to life.

Now that she is a published author, Belle can see the parallels between conventional jobs and those jobs available in the sex industry. She compared what she does to what your typical wasp does behind the desk. "The same basic rules apply. If you want to stay on top you need to be in control at all times. You can't just lie back and expect them to give in you've got to grab at your opportunities, timing is everything, you have to be versatile, and transferable skills are a must."

Clever and sexy, this show rarely disappoints. The premise has always circled around the conflict between two parts of the same whole; prostitute Belle and daytime Hannah battling it out. But Season 3 has already made some huge changes to the particulars and Hannah was completely left out of the premiere. This departure severely limits Piper's character and the season previews make it seem as though Hannah will take a back seat for the rest of the series. I suppose there's no need for the guise anymore now that all the secondary characters are in on the charade, but the crux of the first two seasons has been pulled out from under us.
