It's Hoyt Turn to Take the Spotlight on 'True Blood'

Bill, Sookie and Eric's love triangle may have stolen the spotlight on True Blood but there's another couple on the HBO vampire series that's far more refreshing to watch these days. If you're a fan of this show, you'd know that I'm referring to sweet good-hearted Hoyt and newborn bloodsucker Jessica.

Apart from playing Jason's pal, Hoyt didn't leave me a big impression on the first season of True Blood so it came as a pleasant surprise when he got all caught up in the world of vampires in season 2. Heck not even his portrayer Jim Parrack expected Hoyt to have a juicy storyline for season 2. So with no background on the Charlaine Harris novels and no idea about how to proceed with Hoyt, Parrack kept his character mostly original.

"In the beginning, I think the way it was going was a friend of Jason's that had a tough time with the girls, but I think more because he was sort of this dumbass jerk," Parrack told MTV. "I wasn't certain, and when we shot the pilot I asked Alan who is it that I'm playing here. We didn't have a really clear idea, except that we had a few clues. I was spending some time with the Rattrays in the beginning. There was some reference to me buying weed from them or selling weed to them. It was kind of a different kind role, and I didn't know what to do with it. So finally in the pilot episode there's a scene where Sookie comes over and asks Hoyt what happened to her brother. And I said to Alan, maybe the reason this guy doesn't do so well is because he's innocent and shy. We tried it and everyone really liked it."

I'm sure glad that Hoyt didn't turn out to be yet another jerk on True Blood. Otherwise the 28-year-old mama's boy virgin wouldn't have met his match in the form of adorably mischievous vampire Jessica. While Parrack describes the pairing as the "most grounded storyline" on the show, we all know that their relationship has hit a bump on the road after she took a bite out of Mama Fortenberry's neck. So what will now happen to Hoyt and Jessica? Well, Parrack isn't telling so fans will have to stay tuned to the finale this Sunday to find out.

I'm glad Parrack took his portrayal in that direction...I liked Hoyt last season, b/c the character was sweet and his portrayal was understated.

I love when background characters can come to the for front and really flesh out. They surprise you and grow on you when writers really utilize them. Which is why I love that Trueblood is more of an ensemble show. Bill and Sookie 24/7 would be no different then reading the twilight books back to back, (not recommended for the sane or those over the age of 20)
