Watchmen Already Breaking Box Office Records

Who watches the Watchmen? Only weekend box office numbers will tell for sure, but the big-screen adaptation will give its audiences plenty of chances to see it.

Watchmen will open on 3,611 screens this weekend, the most ever for an R-rated film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Additionally, 1,600 locations will offer midnight screenings, including all 124 of the theaters showing the film in IMAX.

Watchmen director Zack Snyder is no stranger to big openings. In March 2007, Snyder's 300 opened to $71 million in its first weekend, earning $28 million on its first day alone. And that was all done on nearly 1,000 less screens.

The anti-superhero film, a long-awaited adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' seminal graphic novel, focuses on a group of retired costumed heroes who band together once again when one of their own is murdered.

Watchmen certainly has the market cornered this weekend - it's the only new film opening in wide release. Watchmen ticket pre-orders represent 90 percent of Fandango's advance sales for this weekend, and an IMAX representative said the IMAX website crashed four times this week thanks to a surge in Watchmen interest.
