Ah, Project Runway...
I've criticized you this season for being sub-par, but at the same time I am still so invested in you!
So...last night's episode was kind of a shocker.
As we learned at the end of last episode, all 4 designers were to be competing for the 3 slots at fashion week this season. As usual, Tim Gunn goes to visit everyone in a Saturn (got that everyone? Project Runway wants you to buy a Saturn) and checks on how their collections are doing.
Leanne has done what she does best - her architectural pleating, this time inspired by waves - and it's all very pretty, but as is I don't know if I see enough diversity for a win (didn't all of those pieces kind of look the same?).
Korto also does what she does best - ethnic influenced, big-sleeved clothing made in earthy colors. Tim thinks that one of the outfits looks a little too sexual. Why Tim? Because there's practically a giant vagina in the middle of it? However, I think Korto's collection is nice-looking as a whole, too, with the exception of her fugly wedding dress.
Oh Jerell. I was totally pulling for Jerell all season long, but after a glimpse at his collection I had a bad feeling that it was one of his few "misses" of the season (and a bad time for a miss, at that). My gut-reaction to Jerell's collection - from the color palate to the designs - was...this is not cute. And not "this isn't cute but it looks soo high-fashion" not-cute (which was my reaction after the first glimpse of Siriano's collection last season), but straight up ugly. Sigh.
And lastly, Kenley. Kenley seemed like one of the most talented designers at the beginning of this season, and then slowly deteriorated (or was edited as such) into one of the most hated contestants in Runway history. That insufferable voice! Her collection, however, looks pretty promising; I'd venture to say as much if not more so than Leanne's. Kenley seems to finally done something beyond making a 50s style dress, including hand-painted silk, which really looked exquisite (to use a Tim Gunn favorite word).
Of course, Heidi and crew will not be seeing everyone's entire collections. They just want to see those wedding dresses...and...a bridesmaid dress crafted then and there. Surprise! Actually, I feel like they should have seen that one coming.
So getting right to it...as expected, Jerell and Korto make butt-ugly bridesmaid dresses to go along with their butt-ugly wedding dresses. Leanne's wedding dress is the closest thing to a traditional wedding dress, yet remaining what seems to be high-fashion. I don't even think Kenley's dress is all that great, but the judges do. In fact, the reason why it is so great is because it resembles this:
Kenley's is on the right. Alexander McQueen's is on the left. Holy wow...they do look the same (though Kenley denies it)!
Luckily, because there are these:
Kenley's questionable knockoff is safe. Leanne, of course, is also safe. That girl is certainly consistent!
Down to Jerell and Korto...it's close, but ultimately the judges boot my dear sweet Jerell.
While it pains my heart (because I loved Jerell and because in any other season he would have already had a guaranteed slot at Fashion Week), Jerell's collection (which the judges never even saw...so they claim...though I have my doubts) would not have cut it at fashion week. Auf wiedersehen, Jerell.
So...did the right 3 designers make the cut? Who will win it all next week? Anybody else notice how Kenley had no friends and a picture of her dead grandmother when Tim Gunn visited her?
