Is the C-Dub in Trouble??

Fans of Gossip Girl, Smallville, Supernatural and/or anything else that airs on the CW need to listen up!

It seems that the CW - the only network on television currently dedicated to airing shows comprised entirely of supremely beautiful people - may be in trouble.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that if the ratings don't improve for the CW by the end of next season that the network is in danger of folding (in the very least one of the network's owners would likely have to leave).

When the WB and UPN merged into the CW just under 2 years ago, the goal was to grab all of those young viewers that advertisers love, but didn't necessarily have a network to call their own. Sadly though, the CW is getting less viewers now than either the WB or UPN received individually a few years ago (see graph). The network has lost about 28% of its target audience (18-34 year olds) this season alone. Gossip Girl, which has been getting tons of buzz this year, still only gets about 2.5 million viewers a week - which just isn't very many people (causing some to call it "the cultural phenomenon that isn't").

Bottom line: If you want the CW to stick around, start watching!

how do they calculate how many viewers there are? they must understand that most people age 18-34 watch these shows online now since they don't have time necessarily to watch their favorite shows at their designated times. it would be horrible if they shut down the CW, all the shows i watch are all from the CW.

yes, but if we are all watching them from sites online that aren't legit (i.e. not iTunes bought or directly through the networks website) then there is no way for them to calculate it,i guess they choose to ignore the fact there are so many of these sites because it would cause them more bother than it's worth

crap!!! i really do wish i can support the cw..coz i love oth and gg..and if they shut down my viewing pleasure will certainly be depleted...=( but the cw is not available here in my country so watching on-line is really the ONLY option short of relocating to another country...i just wish they find a way to count the viewers of the cw shows on the internet so that they realize how much people are really watching..=)

That seriously sucks. Basically the only channel I do watch on the television is the cw. That would suck if it were no more. I mean, I like the show Bones more than Gossip Girl, but I always watch GG because it's right before One Tree Hill and I'm not much of a channel changer. xP But that would totally suck though...

It would cost me an additional $20 a month to purchase the block of channels that the CW is in through my cable provider and that's $20 I don't have. It'll be too bad if they shut it down, I really do enjoy One Tree Hill.

it's the CW's fault.people who live in canada or other countries other than the u.s and dont have satellite have no acces to this channel. if they made their channel on regular cable, or accesible to countries other than the u.s they'd defenitly get more viewers. because all the people that have no acces to the CW channel, rely on websites like sidereel.

Well they seriously need to change their target audience. I dont know a single person under 21 who watches those shows. Maybe if they aimed their advertising at 12 - 25 year old girls they would have better luck.

I think the problem isn't that they don't calculate the people who watch online, it's that they don't count, period. Ratings show how many people watch shows and therefore the adverts inbetween. The videos online are edited so there aren't any adverts. It doesn't matter how many of us watch the shows online because we don't benefit the network in any way - why would advertisers pay the network to have there adverts inbetween shows where most of the demograhic watch edited versions online? They want the numbers of people who watch the shows on tv, with the adverts/commercials as these encourage companies to pay more for advertising (if they're higher) and make the network money.

Actually, most networks, if you're in the US and watching their shows online on their website have advertisements that companies pay for slots on, just like regular television. this was actually a large part of the problem in the recent writer's strike. The only problem is, alot of networks need licenses to be able to air in other countries. For examples, the CRTC in Canada determines what is aired in Canada and rules that a certain amount of advertising and general content has to be Canadian, therefore it's more difficult for American networks to broadcast on the internet here. These networks need to work harder to make their shows internationally available, in decent quality on the internet.

Wait so Gossip Girl only gets 2.5 million viewers a week... and has this massive buzz around it yet my favourite Women's Murder Club was getting 9 million every week and that gets cancelled! How is that fair!? Oh I hate networks anyway.
I always liked the shows on the CW, Veronica Mars being the ultimate but I never truly forgave them for cancelling VM. I like OTH too but that of late hasn't exactly enthralled me, neither has Smallville. This seasons Smallville finale was not as good as previous seasons. So, I think the views is not just down to people watching online, its the quality as well. I never really got into Gossip Girl so I can't comment there. Even with what I think to be a dip in the quality of the shows this season, I hope the CW doesn't get cancelled. It will probably pick up if the shows do, and if they get some good new shows going.
