OMG, they used OMFG

LOL.

Not surprisingly, the PTC - the Parent's Television Council - is angry at yet another program. This time around it's Gossip Girl and their steamy OMFG ads complete with Serena and Nate getting it on (or, as they call it, a "sexually suggestive photo showing a teenage boy kissing a girl's cleavage").

The PTC "deplores the CW's deliberate use of profanity and sexual imagery to exploit and further corrupt young viewers, and has warned its members about the show and the new ad campaign".

I generally think the PTC is crazy (like with their recent complaint about ANTM), but I think that they do have a case here.

The ads were clearly meant to be incendiary; while the show certainly has sex occurring, I don't find that the show has any more sex present than a whole lot of other teenage shows. Thus, making an ad which portrays a steamy sex scene was a purposeful choice to portray the show as if it is entirely about sex, which is not the case. Also, the Serena/Nate hookup footage from which the picture is taken occurred waaaay earlier in the season; it honestly is kind of dated.

I think that the CW could have used their OMFG with a photo of Blair screaming at someone and it would have been equally effective and made everyone less angry (the PTC would still be angry about the implied profanity, but I think it was more the double whammy of sex and profanity all rolled into one that brought them over the edge).

Also, we keep hearing all of this talk about how 8pm is family hour; the more steamy TV comes on later. Gossip Girl airs at 8; not 9 or 10, so for this reason alone I think that the ads went a step too far, portraying a program that appears to be inappropriate for an 8PM timeslot.

What are your thoughts?

(Finally, I realize the irony in me posting yet another photo of the ad in question that I have just written I believe to be inappropriate, however I think the damage has already been done; everybody has already seen these ads, so I figured you might want to take another look at the ad in question before deciding your own opinion on the matter).

although there isn't that much sex in the series its fair to say that it revolves fairly consistently around the topic but that's no reason not to watch it at family hour when on other channels its acceptable to see people being shot don't you see how weird that is ... sex is totally legal but shooting people ? I suppose though its not important just wanted to point out that regulatory comities for children's t.v. are always run by outdated beliefs if you want to stop something stop promoting violence i mean the fucking power rangers are worse than gossip girl

Sex happens.
Making it so taboo just means when it does happen, it won't be any good. I hate how afraid people are of it.
Good sex comes from people getting the *fuck* over it.It's not like this ad is all that racy.

Who realy cares. Its not as sex is the worst thing a teenager could do. Hell many of our parents were infact married by the age of 18...and if you don't think they were banging prior to that time...well many of you need to check the birth certificate against the wedding dates...
Of course teenagers have sex, we should just be glad if theyre using protection. If we think that not talking about it or depicting it on television will change anything...well then we are out of our fucking minds.
Its not as if shakespear plays lacked sex scenes...and all the actors of the day were males (they used the younger more feminine teens as females). Go back and read Romeo and Juliet and othello.
These people are nuts. They wish to hide the reality in order to change it.
