'HIMYM' scoop: Stella's the mother! Or IS she? - Featured

Spoilers from last night's episode

After last night's ending on How I Met Your Mother, everybody is obviously wondering once more, "Is Stella the mother?"

Check out EW's interview with show creator Carter Bays on the subject. While he doesn't answer the question directly, he certainly hints at an answer:

Is Stella the mother?

CARTER BAYS: I won't say whether she's the mother or not, [but] we were definitely very careful in the wording of the narration. Obviously, we're not going to say, 'Okay, here she is! Show's over."

Was it an intentional fake-out?

BAYS: Nothing's a fake-out on this show. We established very early on that this is a very windy, twisty story, and the message of the show is there's a ridiculous series of events that has to happen before this guy meets the woman he marries...I will say this about the next two episodes: Everything will be made clear and it will move the ball forward.

You certainly got people talking.

BAYS: We freaked out a ton of people. We've never really kept a big secret from the audience. And what secrets we do have we usually tell people and there are usually spoilers floating around. And this kind of felt like, "Let's try and do something that takes everyone by surprise and really blow people's minds." And I think we did it.

What kind of reaction have you been getting?

BAYS: It seems to be split 50/50; some people loved it but a lot of people really hated it. And I certainly don't want to tell you that I like it when people hate my show, but knowing where the next two episodes go, I feel like those are both legitimate reactions and both what we were going for.

Does the yellow umbrella belong to Stella?

BAYS: I can't say one way or the other.

Can you give me a preview of next week's episode?

BAYS: We'll reveal why Ted running into her again is such huge moment. He already ran into her once before and didn't do anything, but this one has more meaning and we'll find out why next week.

Is it your plan to hold off on confirming the identity of the mother is until the final episode of the series?

BAYS: That's always been the plan, but obviously we have a lot of options at our fingertips.

So...what do you guys think? Personally, I think he's saying very clearly that Stella is not the mother...

When I watched the episode, I figured he kept mentioning the moments that set other events into action for a reason, and not necessarily with Stella being the "final" event. It seemed like running into Stella now may lead to him eventually running into his future wife. And, yes, it sounds as though Carter Bays is saying the same thing.

I agree. Plus, when he's telling his kids the story of how he met their mother in the future, there's never been any mention of an older stepsister. And the daughter seems to young to be Stella's daughter...

They did something back when they were going to get married where it showed how Ted's kids would look IF Stella had been the mom (Blonde hair). This to me kind of gave it away that Stella definitely wasn't the mom.

It's not Stella because he said at the St. Pattys day party that his future wife was there but he didn't know until later. I think -I'm almost positive- its a girl in that epsidoe that he accidentally ran into. The moment was VERY brief but I bet you anything it's her. Go back to that episode.

This episode freaked me out. I DON'T think Stella's the mother. Partly because he already met her, dated her and almost married her in season 3. So if she'd been the mother, then it should have been made clear then. Also, that interview does imply to me that she's not the mother, it was just set up that way for shock value.
Cholochisma: I was thinking that, too. I was actually just re-watching some season 3 eps today, and when he bumped into that girl, I had the same thought-- she's probably the mother.

I dont think that Stella is the mother based on this.. if she was, then the daughter would not be his daughter.. don't forget she already has a child.

Also, when Stella leaves him at the alter, he makes a comment to two blonde kids that if he had married Stella that things would have turned out differently, proving that Stella is NOT the mother. (Season 4, Episode 5)

I don't think Stella is the mother. Recalling from "the three day rule" Ted said he asked the mother's phone number straight away and called her straight away. But he didn't ask Stella straight away for her number so I'm pretty sure she isn't the mother.

What i really wanna know is what kind of actress will play the mother. Stella is obviously Sarah Chalke, ie Elliot from Scrubs (and i think we can safely assume she isn't the mum), so do they get another famous comedian, a model or just a really attractive unknown?

Blears... This is the actress in that picture. I definitely think that she is going to be the mother.
