Gilmore Girls - Lorelai Gilmore
Yeah, we already claimed Rory Gilmore as a favorite, but Lorelai Gilmore has got to be one of the best (and coolest) TV Moms of all time, so she gets her very own spot on the list! What made Lorelai so great? She was caring, witty-as-hell, gorgeous, independent and successful - all while managing to remain her daughter's best friend. Major props to Lauren Graham for delivering 1000 words a minute and making it look easy and sound natural. That woman was cheated out of all kinds of awards for 7 straight seasons of work on Gilmore Girls!
Smallville - Lex Luthor
Lex Luthor - especially in Smallville's early seasons - was a fascinating character who always kept us guessing his motivations as he straddled the boundaries between good-guy and villain. In fact, Lex was so likable in the show's early days that I hoped he would magically remain good! As the show progressed, Lex certainly headed increasingly towards evil-dom, though you have to admit that Lex has made for one of the more complex villains on TV, still managing to gain our sympathies from time to time.
One Tree Hill - Brooke Davis
Over the course of One Tree Hill's six seasons, more than one of the characters have at times made me want to pull my hair out (I'm looking at you, Peyton Sawyer). However, I think the one character on the show that has been the most consistently compelling (and not annoying) is Sophia Bush's Brooke Davis. Brooke is definitely one of the most evolved characters on OTH since its earlier seasons, and especially with the 5 year time jump, it's fun to see Brooke now as an "adult" and recognize how much she has changed since Season 1. I think big props also go to Bush herself, who is definitely one of the bigger acting talents of the show.
Supernatural - Dean Winchester
I'm pretty much in love with both of the Winchester brothers on the WB's (and now CW's) Supernatural, but if you tied me up and demanded that I choose a favorite between the two - I guess I am slightly partial towards Dean. Jensen Ackles has just nailed the cocky yet brotherly and protective character of Dean; he's just oh-so-endearing (and did I mention hot)! Dean also contributes most of Supernatural's comic relief as the deliverer of the majority of the program's funniest lines, which seals his status for me as a Favorite of the WB.
I chose two representatives from Buffy/Angel.
Buffy is obviously a gimme. One of the strongest female characters on TV ever - she managed to make slaying vampires and other forces of darkness seem easy (and plausible) in comparison to navigating the travails of high school, college and beyond. Buffy was always the antithesis of the female victim - she was an apocalypse-stopping female heroine, and she was awesome as hell.
I also wanted to single out Spike as he was an unlikely favorite that arose out of the Buffy/Angel-verse. Initially a villain and nemesis of Buffy's, Spike eventually reformed and unexpectedly evolved into a convincing love interest for Buffy, oddly understanding aspects of Buffy's pain that nobody else could. Never did I think that I'd find that bleached-blond hair and scar attractive, but Spike won me over, and I know I'm not alone here!
So...who are your Favorite-ever characters of The WB?
