New Sitcom Alert: Worst Week

I'm always on the lookout for a good 30 minute sitcom; it's just that they are difficult to find. CBS already has 2 solid sitcoms airing on Monday nights (How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory) - three even - if you're a fan of the perpetually Emmy-nominated Two and a Half Men. Will the new offering, Worst Week, give the network a straight 2 hour block of enjoyable comedy?

Not in my opinion; I'll be sticking to just Mother and Big Bang.

Given how positively Worst Week was reviewed by sites like E!Online and TV Guide (both had it at the top of their lists of new fall shows), I was actually pretty underwhelmed.

The general premise of Worst Week is that Sam (played by Kyle Bornheimer) is an everyman sort of fellow - handsome but not intimidatingly attractive - who, already not particularly accepted by his girlfriend's parents, lands himself in one terrible situation after another over the course of a stay with the aforementioned parents. Yep...it's Meet the Parents for TV.

Interestingly, I loved Meet the Parents, and I know that there are many people out there who don't like the "stuff goes wrong" sort of humor. They find it excruciating. I generally do like this brand of comedy, as long as it's actually funny. Worst Week did not make me laugh in the slightest.

One problem might be that I felt like I had seen it all before...in Meet the Parents. Another problem was that by the end of Meet the Parents...stuff eventually does go right. And that's what makes it enjoyable in the end - the happy resolution of all of those things that went awry. Worst Week ended with more stuff going wrong, and I can't help but thinking that if nothing goes right until the series finale that I might gouge my eyes out.

I also wonder how the so-called humor will be sustained. I didn't even find the premiere's gags particularly funny - mistakenly thinking the dad was dead, mistakenly peeing on the goose, mistakenly setting the portrait on fire, etc. - but even if you did find these funny - do you think you still will after 3 or so episodes worth of similar scenarios? I feel like this premise will get very old very quickly.

Another more minor nitpick was that I found the frantically-paced "all of these mishaps are so cute" background music to be overdone. But that is a minor problem that could obviously be fixed.

I do agree with all of the reviews that Bornheimer is a likable guy with a lot of charm, but for me, that wasn't enough. I might give the show a second week to improve and develop, but unless things drastically change (which I don't think they are going to) this one's probably going to be a pass for me.

What did you all think of Worst Week?

Srsly. Big Bang Theory is easily the worst show on television right now. Pains me to see you put it on the same pedestal as How I Met Your Mother.

The Big Bang Theory is cute, funny, and most importantly it is witty. Good writing can bring out a good sitcom even with somewhat lame acting and a weak premise.

Watch the British version of Worst week of my life. It ok if you like that kind of thing. And Ben Miller who plays the lead is one of the best comics of his generation!
