Breaking: Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton to Depart OTH - Featured

I honestly didn't see this one coming. I assumed that all of the 'CMM and Hilarie departing OTH' buzz was just a part of their contract negotiations - and a bluff on their part (I mean really...what else are those 2 going to do?).

However, EW's Michael Ausiello has just confirmed that both Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton will not be returning in the Fall for the show's 7th season.

From Ausiello:

"Murray and Burton have been engaged in rather high-profile contract negotiations for the past several months. Ultimately, a deal couldn't be worked out and both actors will make their final appearances in next Monday's season finale.

To fill the void next season, a Hill insider tells me that two new characters will be introduced. Additionally, Austin Nichols (Julian) is being promoted to a series regular. "

Frankly, I feel as though in recent seasons there has been a definitive shift - and "Lucas" and "Peyton" have far and wide become the show's least compelling characters. That being said, having the show's main star depart is still a little bit crushing.

What say you? Devastated? Brooke, Haley, Nathan, et al can totally carry the show on their own? Discuss!

Whilst Lucas and Peyton's story lines haven't been consistently compelling it would be difficult to continue the show without 2 main characters, especially Lucas and Peyton as the show really has revolved around them moreso than any other character. I can't see how the show could continue without them and personally I don't think it should, we are bound to see the same thing that happened to the OC after Marissa died.
What confuses me more than anything is why the writers and producers didn't think to wrote an ending for this season whereby the show could end altogether as they knew there was no guarantee of anyone renewing their contracts. What also astounds me is that CMM thinks he will be able to do better somewhere else, at least Hilarie has her own company so if things don't pan out well she can focus on that, but what does CMM have apart from dubious acting skills?

The show will last through the 7th season i think, but without peyton and lucas they show won't last..unless they change it up alot to make it even better than before. BUt think about this.. the show started with to rivalry half brothers and thats what caught everyone one..now they have taken one of the brothers away..some people say the main character and now all we can do is wait

I think that the show can survive without them. Out of the main 5 they are my least favorite, and I think that their story lines have been a bit boring. The one thing i will miss though will be some quality Jamie/Lucas scenes, because they were too cute for words.
As for the show turning into the OC post Marissa, I can only see that as a good thing. Third season of The OC was unbearable, and i think they really started getting back to 1st season goodness in parts of the 4th season (although not all of it). But i do think that, if done well, OTH can survive their departure, although, I'm sure there are some truly heartbroken fans out there...

I'm actually VERY SURPRISED!!! OTH won't be the same despite them both being my least favourite couple. I guess it's all gonna be about Brooke and Julian which i have nothing against as i love them both. But it's such a shame...it SUCKS!
To be honest there's no point of another season...it will just drag on. If Brooke and Julian don't end up together at the end of this season then thats what the next season is going to be about. I just want them together why continuosly drag that whole relationship???

THIS IS RIDICULOUS.The show started out being about Lucas and the drama in Tree Hill with Nathan and Dan and Karen, and him falling in love with Peyton, the girl he so desperately wanted but couldn't have. Without him, the show is just somewhat pointless. Its going to be missing what made OTH into OTH.
The other characters are great, but without the two main characters... its just not the same.I'm very disappointed.

I think it's going to be difficult for the writers to do something as pure and deep as it is with Lucas and Peyton. I mean, the first scene of the show is dealing with them, it's THEM, they are the tvShow.Even if I Adoooooore Brooke and like the whole Naley thing too, I don't know, OneTreeHill won't be the same without the big PEYTON drama of the season!!I Love that chick man!!!

peyton and lucas are cute, but incredibly boring. i think it will be better without them. at least we will have two fewer unrealistically successful careers around. nathan and haley are way cuter and less boring, and im SO EXCITED that julian will be a regular! brooke has always been my favorite so hopefully this means more of her, and i also hope for more skillz, who is totally underutilized - all his storylines are about girls. plus, he went to freakin college, what the hell is he doing as an assistant basketball coach? get the boy a job!

See Perez's comments on it:

I honestly kind of saw it coming. Down to business their story line was getting a bit dull with all the crying. However this will be the big challenge for Swan to keep the plot alive and prevent an OC-alike ending.

Hey, if Mark Schwahn was able to pull of a season like season 5 with the whole gang leaving off after high school and then coming back with a stronger story line four years later from college - he can do anything. Many writers have tried before and none (as far as I can tell) have ever succeeded. OTH has surprised me over and over again and I know that Mark will keep us on the edge of our seats for as long as we'll have him.

It's really shocking. The thing is, like most have stated, One Tree Hill started out in Lucas's POV on how his life was with Nathan, Dan and a couple of others. To take away the most important cast is kinda like killing the show. Personally, I think that the season would end in Season 7 but hey, what do I know?
On the other hand, as some have pointed out, Mark Schwan is a really talented writer. So we can definitely expect surprises from him!

So it's just been confirmed that not only is Hillary character leaving the show, but so is Chads. Now while I'm no writer that seems really stupid for many reason, not only that the show is not gonna work without the two main characters. Here is my outlook on what should of happened. So Peyton was gonna die at the end of the season we all saw that one coming, well with her death and clearly they wouldn't kill off her child as well. That leaves Lucas to raise the baby on his own. Enter Brooke. She just lost her would be adopted daughter a few eps ago. She has always wanted a child AND Peyton was her best friend so it would only make sense that she would step in to assume the mother role to Peyton's child. That and also to console Luke on the loss of his wife, which naturally would end up turning into a relationship possibly more between the two of them. Thereby bringing the series full circle and to a close. Just my thoughts.

I agree RachelL, they have become the least compelling characters of late. I mean, you have to know there is something wrong with the show when they introduce a storyline by were a main character could die if she continues her pregnancy... and you find yourself NOT caring. Sure in the past I liked Peyton, she was no Brooke, but at times she had interesting storylines and I still enjoy any interaction she and Brooke have together (even though those are few and far between this season). As for Lucas... well since we flashed forward 4 years - I have found myself annoyed by him. He seems far more whiny than before which (as well as being extremely unattractive) means he annoys me everytime he interacts with anyone else. Before Smallville pulled off losing two major characters I never would have said it was possible... but it did and it is still a good show. If anything it refreshed the concept and made it more interesting to watch. Perhaps One Tree Hill can do the same...? Had it been two other characters then I would have agreed and said there is no point in another season. Truthfully, I don't think it will matter... at least not to me. I'm just glad Sophia is coming back as she definitely makes the show for me. In fact at times she has been the only thing that has kept me watching. We'll find out next season I guess... Although, Marissa's death in the OC anyone? That didn't go down too well...

If they pull it off i will be suprised but this season is not very good anyway so the two main characters leaving will really put it to the test.

What's with the TWO main characters thing?! They really are not. You're acting like it's called the Leyton show. Maybe, at a time, they were more central than the others but for the last two seasons neither of them has had a particulary AMAZING storyline except the two of them inevitably getting together. And if I am honest, I think this whole pregnancy storyline was partly put in place so the writers would have an easy way of writing them both out if Chad and Hilarie decided to depart. Take the last two seasons... all the huge storylines have not been focused around them. It has kind of felt like the writers weren't sure where to take it now they'd finally got the pair together. It is true that the odds are against the show. A lot of shows crash and burn when they lose major characters, the OC being a great example of that. But remember when we were all sat here speculating how the show could possibly survive now they had all graduated...? I'm pretty sure it was compared to the OC back then as well. This show has great consistent writing. Yes we have had the odd hiccup but there is a reason were nearing the seventh season, and it sure is hell isn't because of Chad or Hilarie's (as much as I like her...) acting. Bitch about it if you like, but real fan's of the show would stick at it simply because their fans of the show... not one or two characters. At the very least give the writers some credit.

It's strange to hear this news since the show has basically revolved around Lucas since the beginning, though I have noticed that the show has been pushing away from mainly centering Lucas and more on the other characters more as well. But the relationship between Lucas and Peyton has been one of the major relationships on OTH, so it'll be a weird shift out, though I do hope the season finale does justice to the show and gives it that kick in the right direction that is needed for the departure of both characters. I don't know if I'm going to be avidly watching next season, but I do love Julian; so if he's a regular, that will be interesting to watch his and Brook's relationship grow etc. :]

are you F-ing kidding me? seriously? no leyton?
totally CMM's fault, obviously she wanted to stay.what they do not get is that to us, at least us the oldest OTH viewers, Tree Hill is more than JUST a show. i mean with the whole naley romance and the brucas-leyton triangles, the gilrs friendships and more like the music, the other caracters, the idea of rivercourt is SO MUCH MORE. it's inexplicable, really.
KILL THE SHOW! don't screw it up!

I give them props for having better things tobe doing, because this has been going on for almost 7 years. I honestly don'tknow if I will be watching as often anymore. Well for one i'm not bothered, i don't see how peyton and lucas could add anymore drama than they already have. I'm also pretty sure having Julian around will make the departure easier because well we need another hot one on the show. :L
Anyway the only reason me and my friends watch it is because of Brooke, she is hands down the best character, she brings so much drama to the show.
I just want to know how the producers are going to cut peyton and lucas off! i mean Peyton can die from having the baby but how will lucas leave? =l

to be quite honest, i think season 7 is going to be exciting. i have been DYING for some Naley drama - everything is to peachy perfect for them so something has to shake up. i love where skills' character is going with Jamies teacher. i'm hoping for some Mia/Chace action and i LOVE LOVE LOVE Julian + Brooke. i think it's definitely going to be a different show without Lucas and Peyton, but i'm pretty sure there will be cameos- at least by Hilarie because i know she didn't want to leave the show. and Mark is an incredible writer and has done great things with each season so far and i have faith that the REAL fans will keep watching the show. YES it started out as a show about brothers and blah blah blah. but even after the first season wrapped it strayed away from that and developed characters for the specific purpose of having different story lines. the other characters- Nathan, Haley, Brooke, Skills, Mouth, Millicent, Jamie, Karen, Dan, Deb- they're all interesting and unique. I'm EXCITED for the finale and SO ready for season 7. The only think I hope for is a good send of for Lucas and Peyton- i loved their characters and I want their exit to be a good one.

even though I think the Lucas & Peyton stories haven't been very good since I'd say the Lindsey wedding, I'm not sure if the show will be able to keep itself going with the main character and his love interest since season 1 leave.I think we may be getting a case of deja vu here (the OC anyone) but I hope in this case fans of the show won't stop watching and will at least give the new cast members a shot.Lets just hope that they'll come back to visit every now and again even if Peyton dies (no one would have thought Keith would come back once he had died but we were proven wrong). Also, is it just me or is this a perfect opportunity for writers to bring back in the whole HCM thing, i.e. Peyton dies along with baby and Lucas has heart-attack. Just my little prediction.

I wouldn't compare this to the OC - I never liked Marissa that much and i loved season 4.
I would compare it to Joey trying to carry on after Friends. It would be the same if any of the main characters left especially 2 of them. The 5 main characters are all linked and important in their own ways but they can't stand on thier own, even though there are still 3 of them i don't think it will work. i think that once the links are broken, the show will suffer.
But I will definitely give it a chance and i'm hoping they will suprise me :)

i completely connect with peyton (i know quite sad!) and am dissapointed that chad and hilarie are not returning for another season although i know they cant do it forever. Love how season 6 ended, although it still wud be nice if they both came back and made special appearances throughout season 7. I loved the whole leyton story from the beginning and thats what kept me addicted so am not sure season 7 will be the same, lucas and peyton never said goodbye or made any plans for the future so (fingers crossed!X) they will appear in the first couple of episodes to say their goodbyes and leave oth. Also i never liked dan but i pity him now, it wud be nice to see him make ammends with his 2 sons and be apart of jamie and sawyers lives for a bit until he departs. So just a big thanks to the whole cast and crew of oth, it has had me addicted and has kept me intrigued for a few years now and if this is the end it has left it well, if not heres to brighter things and a brand new season that will be just as good or even better..................

To be honest, lucas and peyton together in Season 6 was extremely annoying, i admit im not the greatest fan of Leyton but then again with every season Leyton just got even more annoying n irritating. i love them apart but just not together. Nevertheless, OTH will never be the same without them, they will be missed, that is because they were there since day one.
I Love Brooke, Nathan and Haley, Season 7 with much more of them and more twists and turns in their lives would be very interesting.I actually enjoyed Season 6 cuz of Brooke and Naley and also Jamie.
Hoping Season 7 will not be as Dull as season 6

As i always say in every site that discussing about this matter, i dont think im going to watch OTH for the 7th season and the rest from now on, coz taking out the 2 main characters is just so wrong!!!
i know im not a fan of lucas and peyton love story, but they are the important characters, especially lucas!!!this story is about him, since day 1!this show even called one tree hill, because of him (remember when karen told lucas, that "there's only one tree hill and that is your home."). i dont get it why they write them off like that.dont they remember what happened to the oc, when marissa (the main character) died???!
besides, personally, i think the finale of the 6th season was good enough to end this series for good, why didnt they just end it that way, instead of renew it for 7th season without the main characters?!yea im a really big fan of one tree hill, but i would be really happy to see that final happy ending as the final episode of the final season of one tree hill.
i dont know, man. but this whole peyton and lucas departure is just really disappointing.so, yea, 6th season was the final season for me.

Lucas is the main character on the show, without him it's just not OTH.I never was a fan of Peyton but I still think the show will not be the same without her either. We all know Nathan and Haley will be together no matter what so their storylines aren't sooo exciting than the other ones. So it wil just be about Brooke. I'm a big fan of her but I wouldn't want to watch the show if she was the only one with good a storyline. I think they should have finished OTH at season 6.
