Why have I labeled Desperate Housewives as Desperate Housewivezzzzzz in this review title? Because the season finale put me to sleep!
I have to tell you, I have been supremely disappointed in the second half of this season of Desperate Housewives. I initially praised the show for it's 5 year time leap. I was skeptical, but it really did seem to effectively reenergize the show, and for the first half of the season I was enjoying the series the most that I had in quite some time.
But...midway through the season, it's like the writers got bored, and all of the progress that the show made vanished. Dave climaxed as a villain when he was harassing Mrs. McClusky (how creepy was that) and pinning arson to Lynette's son...like 10 episodes ago! He hasn't been compelling as a villain since. They even managed to make Edie's big death/send off uninteresting (frankly, the similar episode where the handyman died was better). The reveal that he was David Dash was predictable, and, since we know Susan will never be in any true danger, was part of the reason why the finale was a snorefest.
More on Susan: Sweet Jesus; I know it's supposed to be a cliffhanger who Mike decided to marry, but frankly, I'll be pissed either way. Remarrying Susan will be infuriating, as I don't think the show will allow Mike and Susan to be happy until the series finale, though I don't think I can stomach any additional Susan crises. But...if Mike married Katherine, it will just be a further delaying of the inevitable, and a long, infuriating path of predictable lies and adultery.
However, Susan's character is not the only one that I was disappointed with. Was there really so little to do with Lynette (generally my favorite housewife) that the best they could think of was to give her another baby?!?! Was the best they could do for Gaby to stick Carlos' manipulative niece in the house? This one reeks of Lynette's plotline with Tom's illegitimate daughter from about 2 seasons ago. Thus, the only housewife whose plot I found vaguely interesting was Bree's, as even though a Karl hookup was a long time coming, at least it's something new!
So...from what I can see, the show went to all of the trouble to skip ahead 5 years to mix things up, and over the course of the season, has managed to set everything back to the status quo. Sorry all, but I think it's time for Desperate Housewives to end. These housewives are past their prime.
What did you think of the season finale? Did it put you to sleep as well? Disagree with me? Who do you think Mike married?
