Longtime Saturday Night Live cast member Will Forte will not return for the show's upcoming 36th season, sources tell the New York Times.
According to one of the sources, the split was amicable, as Forte chose to leave to pursue other projects.
E-mails to Forte's rep and NBC were not immediately returned.
Forte, who joined the sketch comedy show in 2002, is best known for his portrayal of offbeat characters, including political candidate Tim Calhoun, opposite tribute band frontman Jon Bovi, ESPN Classic commentator Greg Stink, businessman-turned-hermit The Falconer and, of course, amateur adventurer MacGruber.
SNL returns Sept. 25 at 11:30/10:30c.
