Cancellation Buzz: Dollhouse Officially Sent to the Attic - Featured

We can't say we didn't see this one coming. Dollhouse probably never should have lived to see a second season, but it earned itself an 11th hour renewal for 13 additional episodes on the strength of it's DVR numbers and small, but vocal fanbase. It has pretty much been living on borrowed time since then.

Since returning this Fall, ratings have been sinking each week. FOX had already pulled the show from its Friday timeslot for November sweeps (it's scheduled to return December 4th). But now...FOX has officially pulled the plug on the series (Fans of the show will understand the reference to the the attic in this post's title).

Dollhouse is currently filming its 11th episode and will finish filming the 13 episode order. FOX had already pledged to air all 13 of these episodes and claim to be upholding this promise. Double episodes will begin airing on Friday, December 4th with the finale tentatively scheduled for January 22, 2010.

Since Joss Whedon pretty much already knew that a cancellation was likely after these 13 episodes, he had already been planning "a proper finale".

Dollhouse, you will be missed.

Well, as sad as that might be for hardcore Dollhouse-fans, maybe now Mr. Whedon can do another project, preferably not one with Eliza Dushku. At least the show will have a proper ending.

Proper gutted about this. Although we could all see it coming, it doesn't change the fact that its sad to hear for certain. This show has been getting better and better, and after seeing epitaph one, the show suddenly had a huge amount of depth and scope, and it really showed the brilliance of whendon. It such a shame that fox has once again prevented him from achieving his vision for his show. All I can hope is that he decides to go to another network that wont screw him over next time.

I love Dollhouse but it's been living on borrowed time for awhile now. I hope that the next time Whedon returns to television he doesn't work with FOX.

Even though I knew this was pretty much inevitable, it doesn't take away the fact that I'm still PISSED! Now I guess we can only hope that it will either get picked up by another network, or that Joss can start new project far, far away from FOX. They don't deserve Joss Whedon!

Why was this inevitable? I would think that Dollhouse would have a following among diverse demographics. Fox has some good shows, and Dollhouse was one that I really looked forward to every week. Maybe Joss should make movies. He is an amazing storyteller.

How can you not like Eliza in the show? Without her I doubt it would have got a second season. She brought everything together.

@buttonina--I didn't mean it was inevitable that Dollhouse was going to be canceled because it had no followers, but rather because despite all the fans' best efforts to keep it on the air, FOX was probably going to cancel it anyway because they are stupid and don't know good TV. I blame the cancellation pretty much entirely on FOX, based on the way they have treated the show from the very beginning.

that blows! why should it matter abour ratings when FOX destroys shows with only caring about its sports bollocks.... and terrible news coverage. Joss really needs to wake-up and work with OTHER netowrks... i mean after they cancelled Firefly - one of the best shows EVER made - i have no idea why he would trust them again... i only hope they dont cancel Fringe *sigh* cant we petition another network like SyFy to pick it up???

I don't see why Joss doesn't pitch his stuff to the CW. Buffy and Angel were both products of the old WB, Firefly was ruined by FOX. I assume FOX pays better, even for just a single season, but at least the CW doesn't mind 2 million viewers per episode...

SCREW FOX. I love the stuff Joss Whedon does... Just stay away from FOX. Although I loved Dollhouse, I never really thought it would turn into a huge 8 season show, but I expected it to last longer then this.

Well at least they kept their promise. It wasn't the best idea that Joss has ever had and in many ways acted as a replacement child for firefly. I enjoyed it though and it will be missed. So glad there is going to be a finale, unlike the rush job they gave Sarach Connor...

I am not surprised by this at all. I like the show, but I didn't see it getting that far. The first season was great, I think. The second was lacking, with Fox's history, I could see it being canceled. I am glad also that they are letting them have a finale unlike Buffy's, I hope its a good one and not rushed through same with Angel. That wasn't even a real ending. I think both finales should have been a least 2 hours. Hopefully this one will get that or be picked up on another station.

Well, I'm glad the show gets an ending. I hate watching a show for two seasons and not getting a real ending. I really hate Fox right now. I thought Dollhouse was really cool! I have absolutely no idea where Joss was going with this idea but I think it could've been really cool... Ugh. I really liked the concept.

"Dollhouse, you will be missed."
Yeah, not by me. And this is coming from a long time Joss fan. I liked Angel, I loved Buffy, I adored the hell out of Firefly, and still do. But Dollhouse? Good riddance. This show just never worked.

Glad they're ending it respectfully, however. IMO, that should be standard operating procedure for every network that doesn't want to piss off its viewers.
