After several weeks of reruns, Modern Family returned Wednesday night to remind us why it's one of the best new comedies of the season. The four separate tales tied together on the theme of fears all had their own relaxed charms. And just as I start thinking one story was the obvious standout, I remember a great bit from another and begin to reevaluate. This is a clear sign that "Fears" was a solid episode from beginning to end.
Like almost all episodes of Modern Family, "Fears" excelled at presenting some very basic ideas and then slowly building the situations to hilarious peaks. Haley's panic over taking her driver's test for the third time started typically enough, but led to a tearful breakdown during the middle of her test. Then after passing, she was too overjoyed to put the car in park, leaving the driving instructor behind to pull the emergency break. What's great about Modern Family is that Haley's mother Claire doesn't look at that faux pas as a teaching opportunity. Instead, she rushed her daughter into the DMV to certify her license before the instructor could change his mind.
