'Thor' Gets 'The Office' Actor as the Guardian of Asgard

Another actor has joined the cast ensemble for adventure movie "Thor". According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Pictures has tapped Idris Elba to play Heimdell. The character is described as the guardian of Asgard, who stands on the BiFrost Bridge and is ready to defend the city from intruders.

Before being slated to appear in the Kenneth Branagh-directed movie, Elba starred opposite Beyonce Knowles in "Obsessed". He will be next seen in the heist thriller "Taken" and will have a turn in Dark Castle's DC Comics adaptation "The Losers". The British actor also has a recurring role as Charles Miner in NBC's hit series "The Office".

As of late, "Thor" has cast "Queen of the Damned" star Stuart Townsend, "King Arthur" star Ray Stevenson, and Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano as The Warriors Three. The trio of Asgardian adventurers who fight alongside Thor is made up of Fandral, Hogun, and Volstagg.

Adapted from Marvel comics, "Thor" is an epic adventure that spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. The story centers on Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior, who is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans after his reckless actions reignite an ancient war. He later learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Chris Hemsworth will lead and share screen with Natalie Portman, who will star as Thor's first love Jane Foster. Some other actors who will appear in the film include Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, and Samuel L. Jackson. The production is scheduled to begin in January 2010, while the movie is expected to hit U.S. theaters on May 20, 2011.
