Disney Bails on Narnia Franchise

Let's all watch Lazy Sunday and then have a moment of silence for the Narnia franchise.

Disney has opted to terminate its relationship with Walden Media; a partnership which produced both The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe as well as Prince Caspian.

Disney cited "budgetary considerations and other logistics" which is code for 'they are afraid it won't make enough money'. The first film grossed $750 million worldwide and Caspian grossed a lesser, but still impressive $419 million.

Production for the 3rd Narnia film, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, had been scheduled to begin in early 2009.

A spokesman from Walden has stated that they still remain committed to the franchise; they merely will have to find a new partner.

When you have over $1b made from a franchise, you don't drop it. Even if the third one is a complete flop, you're still firmly in the money. That's the problem with Disney, too greedy for their own good.
If I had a spare $50-60m laying around, I'd partner up with them in a heartbeat (If only :P). Narnia's not going to be breaking any records for the highest grossing trilogy any time soon, but it does make it's monies worth. In fact, I hope it does break some sort of record! Just to show Disney that movies shouldn't be so disposable, perhaps I'd understand more if the Narnia series was in the red.

I wasn't aware of this. Wow.I'm rather upset that they chose to do this before the Dawn Treader, as that was my favorite of all the books. I'd looked forward to seeing it in film very much.
Here's hoping that Walden Media manages to find a suitable partner and get out at least another movie or two for the Narnia series.
Thanks a bunch for sharing the info with us. ^_^;
