'Ugly Betty' Wardrobe Struck By Recession

Wilhelmina Slater might need to tune down her fashion statements. Reports have it that there have been a few budget cuts plaguing the set of Ugly Betty. The decision was made, and the ABC series decided to hold back expenses for the character's wardrobe.

Vanessa L. Williams, who portrays the character on the show, explained the situation to the press. On an interview with WWD Fashion, the actress said that the Ugly Betty fashionista will have to take on a new style just to fit the budget.

"With the economic situation what it is, we scaled down in terms of the type of clothing that we're getting," Williams announced. "There was a Naeem Kahn dress that went for $3,000, and they watched it and watched and by the time we got it, it was like $800. So we are being mindful of the budget and waiting for markdowns on Ugly Betty."

Because of that, she admits that she may have to recycle some old clothes. Well, while still remaining stunning of course.

"We've gone through a lot of stuff that is late Eighties, early Nineties, which is fantastic - a lot of stuff I used to wear when I was recording back in the day."

We hope the recession won't affect the quality of the show though, since the character is very particular about the clothes she wears. She's MODE royal Wilhelmina Slater, for crying out loud. But then again even she has to bow down to crisis. We might see less of her sophisticated wardrobe, and we wouldn't mind as long as she remains a worthy antagonist to Betty (America Ferrera).

The surprisingly 46-year-old Vanessa Williams recently displayed her own fashion sense when she hosted this year's Daytime Emmys. She blew everyone away with her opening performance, when she sang and danced to a parody of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" from Broadway's Jersey Boys musical. She was later seen with Dancing with the Stars' Gilles Marini for another entertaining number.

Catch the veteran actress once again when she returns for Ugly Betty's new season, premiering on ABC this October.
