LOCKED UP ABROAD â??The Real Midnight Expressâ? Early Review

National Geographic will be returning for its 4th season of LOCKED UP ABROAD Wednesday June 30th at 10pm. The new season is kicking off in a big way with an episode called “The Real Midnight Express”, featuring the infamous Billy Hayes; author of the book The Midnight Express and subject of the Oscar Award-Winning, Oliver Stone screenplay by the same name.

Now if you’ve read the book, or have seen the film you may be familiar with the story: 23 year old Billy Hayes was brining hash back from Turkey in 1970 and was caught by authorities and sentenced to 4 years 2 months in a Turkish prison. Hayes carried out his sentence, and with only 54 days left to serve the government decided to make an example of him by changing his sentence to life (which they reduced to 30 years). So, Hayes escapes prison and makes it across the Greek boarder where he’s flown safely back to America.
