A Beginner's Guide to Anime Part 2

So you're interested in watching anime? Or at least curious enough about it to read this article. Congratulations! Anime is one of the largest growing genres on television. Right now is the perfect time to start watching. Like I said in my previous article, this hybrid of art and storytelling is soooo worth checking out!

Below are six popular anime I believe any beginner will love. Each of these series is a great place for any novice or newbie to start!

If science fiction is your thing try Steins;Gate

This science fiction anime is the best time travel story you'll ever see. I'm including Back To The Future in that statement so you know that I'm serious! Watching scientist Rintaro Okabe toy with time travel and pay the price is a truly resonant experience. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll love every second of it. Steins; Gate is impossible not to love after you've seen the end of the second episode.

If horror is your thing, try Tokyo Ghoul

Cannibalism, ghouls, fight scenes, and a heavy dose of blood make this anime one of the goriest. But it is also very, very good, not to mention popular. In a world with Ghouls, human lookalikes that feast on flesh, no human is safe. If you can handle something dark with more than a little bite ;) try this one out!

If action, adventure, and long running series are your thing, try Bleach

Ichigo Kurosaki is a soul reaper. His job is to help spirits pass on to the Soul Society and to vanquish any threats with his huge zanpakuto (sword). This anime has it all. Awesome sword fighting scenes, tons of jokes, a great soundtrack, an intriguing plot, tons of dynamic characters and best of all over 350 episodes!!!

If you like fantasy, magic and silliness try Fairy Tail

If you like kitties, magic, silly humor, or uplifting shows about friendship you have to check out the adorably cute Fairy Tail. It tells the story of Lucy Heartfilia, a wizard just coming into her own, as she joins the best magical guild in all of Fiore. Together with her Fairy Tail guild mates, they use their magic and go on tons of crazy adventures. A favorite in the anime community due to the large number of episodes, merchandise, and fans!

If you like shows that are intelligent, thought provoking, slick, and addictive try Durarara!!

This classic anime gained popularity while it was shown on Adult Swim's Toonami block. Telling the story of three high school friends living in a city filled with secrets, Durarara!! is my very favorite anime. Filled with all sorts of classic anime tropes, each character is a revelation. Whether it's universally loathed/loved Izaya Orihara, the magnanimous Shizuo Heiwajima, or headless rider/dullahan Celty Sturluson, Durarara always has an exciting story to tell.

If you like your shows kid friendly, cute, and filled with stunning visuals try Little Witch Academia

Netflix's Little Witch Academia is delightful to watch. Young Witch Akko has just been accepted to the magic school of her dreams. Unfortunately, she's the least talented in her class. But with determination and heart, she is determined to become an inspiration just like her idol Shiny Chariot. The second season of this amazing show was just recently released.

I wholeheartedly recommend every anime on this list and hope you find the right one that gets you hooked! Let me know how you liked them in the comments below.

First of all, kudos for trying to get people interested in Anime. One thing I'd add as general information is that (no different than with TV shows) there are thousands of possibilities, and some will suck. But contrary to TV shows, there's something here for everyone (and I mean EVERYONE).
I know what they say about opinions, however as someone who has been watching, reviewing and generally obsessed with Anime I have to at least try to correct the suggestions a bit. Although you've been trying to split them into genres, you've basically selected a single genre with slight variations between TG, Bleach and Fairy Tail. I would substitute "Bleach" for "One Piece", as it is the longest running series in Anime history, has one of the best comedy elements for that genre, not to mention it's all about a giant adventure. For a Horror show I'd suggest either "Mahou Shoujo: Madoka Magica or Bokurano, or in case of a thriller feeling "Death Note". Tokyo Ghoul is just more of the same as Bleach and Fairy Tail, just with a slightly different premise. "Durarara!!" is a great suggestion in itself, but "Baccano!" will be so much better and much less aimed specifically at teenagers. As far as the last show ("Little Witch Academia") it's a great thing to have a child watch on their own, however if you're into watching with them I'd go with something like "Shin Atashinchi". Steins;Gate remains as one of the top anime of all time - I would not dare suggest otherwise.

Cheers, and let's hope you can influence someone to try Anime. Very hard to go back from that ;)

Good list! I'd also recomend Cowboy Bebop which is a wonderful blend of genres and Elfenlied for fans of gore/splatter.

Agree with Poio. Bleach and Fairy tail scratch the same itch.

I'd also toss in an entry-level mecha anime for the same space fans.

I've been binging Little Witch Academia. I saw both movies and am up to episode 14. I absolutely love it. The animation is so magical (no pun intended) and feels both movie-esque and miyazaki-like. The characters are fun, and the themes endearing. Not to mention, Akko-chan is a legendary super cutie!!!!

Hey everyone thanks for all the comments! So I have reccomended Madoka, Death Note, 7 deadly Sins, in other articles. Love them!
Poio- I totally get where you're coming from about the variety. I just thought FT/Bleach appeal to different demographics. A lot is similar because I only rec stuff I like. Thanks for taking the time to leave such a great comment!
Chuck Finley I like Benop but haven't seen enough to rec which I know is like a total sin. I cant rec Elfen on Sidereel because of the creepy underage/incest stuff. Thanks for the comment dude!
Unknownfear- So glad you are liking Little Witch Academia!!!! I am definitely putting Kuromukuro in my next list. I loved it!
Antonellaonai- Love the ones you listed will do for sure. Unlimited Blade Works is like the most amazingly animated! Good eye/ridiculously awesome hair!
Moniie- Checked out Angel Beats and it was fantastic just like you said :) Thank you so much for your nice comments.
Please do try out one of the anime on this list!

Fairy Tail does start off a little slow but once you are hooked you'll love it! The arcs get better as the series progresses :)

@TelevisionFanboy Yeah you should definitely finish watching Bebop, it has one of the best end fights ever. I understand about Elfenlied, it's a mixed bag but really strong overall, I know many people who say it is their favorite anime.
@Unknownfear I think a good entry-level mecha anime would be Escaflowne. I rewatch it every few years and it's still excellent.

Oh, and EVERYBODY should watch Golden Boy, it's hilarious and has a surprisingly heartfelt ending!

I'm inclined to agree with TelevisionFanboy that Kuromukuro would be a good entry-level mecha anime.
Its on netflix so its easy to access, its gorgeous, its super cool, and not very political.

I have been watching Anime since 1999 way before it was even remotely popular in the US. I would recommend watching Trigun, Full metal Alchemist, Last Exile, Chobits, Inyushi and Dragon Ball( DB DBZ Super). There are thousands of different anime's out there. and there really is something for everyone if only given the chance.
