So tonight's episode of Gossip Girl had 2 big reveals:
1. The outing of a character. I don't know about you, but whether you had read the numerous spoilers or not, I felt like once it was revealed that Gossip Girl was going to have a gay character that it couldn't be anyone but Eric. Thus, no surprises there.
2. Serena's big secret. Sex tape? Porn? Oh wait! Murder (and maybe a little sex tape thrown in there for good measure as well)!! I have to tell you that when Serena confessed this to Blair at the end of the episode that my response was actually laughter (though to the credit of the writers I totally did not see that one coming).
First of all, I don't believe for a second that Serena directly murdered anyone. She probably gave someone drugs that ultimately died, witnessed an overdose or something else along those lines.
More concerning, however, is that teen dramas and murder plot lines tend to not mesh so well. Either Serena didn't murder anyone and we're just being messed with (in which case the buildup was a waste of time) or Serena actually did murder someone and there will be some sort of a cover-up (which just can't end well).
I fear that we have another Oliver on our hands here. If you recall, the character of Oliver and all of the surrounding story line was pretty much the one universally accepted blunder of the otherwise superb first season of Josh Schwartz's original teen drama, The OC.
What do you all think? Am I overreacting? Can a murder fit in with the tone of Gossip Girl? Did anyone else burst into laughter?
