Spoilers Included (Obviously)
The 2-night, 4-hour finale of So You Think You Can Dance has come to an end and whether you agree or not, America has chosen their winner (or, in your best Cat Deeley Brit voice, their "favourite daancer").
For a 2 hour finale, I have to say that unlike some other FOX shows (*cough* American Idol when I was still watching *cough*), I wasn't compelled to fast-forward through any of it.
Rewatching the judges' favorite dances was a treat, as were all of the other special performances (with the exception, perhaps, of those Jonas twerps, who I am fairly certain were lip syncing). Speaking of which, was I the only one on the Phillip bandwagon for the popping battle (and not just out of pity)? And - even though dancing is obviously what they do - I couldn't help but being wowed by the moves of both Mary and Nigel (especially Nigel), because well, they're kind of old. Considering their age, they moved really well, and you've got to respect the guts it took to do that.
So, getting to the results, Courtney was knocked off first, which was probably a surprise to nobody, as she was the weakest of the final four. That being said (and I've been hard on Courtney), I do think that Courtney has a lot to be proud of (Courtney thinks so too). Looking at her clip reel, she definitely has grown a lot and especially finishing up with a redo of that amazing Jazz routine, she left a lasting impression, which I was not expecting.
Katee was cut next. I have to say that while I went into this finale thinking I would be alright with a victory for Katee, Twitch or Joshua, I feel like Katee was just a little bit shafted. I mean, how many of the "favorite routines" was Katee in? That should speak for itself. I also feel like Katee was the most versatile and consistent out of the final 3. At least she was given that consolation prize of $50K.
I feel like the show had been doing their darndest to make sure things ended with the 2 "untrained male hip-hoppers", so I didn't find it too surprising when we ended up with just that - Joshua and Twitch. Between the two of them, I was kind of ambivalent towards whom I preferred. Both clearly were talented dancers and had great personalities. Overall, I think that Twitch demonstrated a little more originality in his solos (Joshua relied on his jumping turning leg kick thingy quite a few times - you know which trick I'm talking about), but Joshua didn't have a bad routine throughout the whole program (and was never in the bottom, whereas Twitch was). I really could have gone either way.
America, however, chose Joshua. Unlike on American Idol, it wasn't revealed how close the votes were, so we don't know if Josh won by a vote or by a landslide. The "I read too much into things" part of me wonders if the fact that it wasn't stated [that things were super close] meant that it wasn't close. Guess we'll never know.
At any rate, I have a feeling that all of the Final 4 will do just fine in the future. What a great season - and I have to agree that the choreography this year was just at a new level.
