REPLAN IT brings to life the science of “appropriate technology” – using engineering techniques and physical structures, machinery and manpower, to meet the specific needs of diverse communities. The technology uses only the material at hand or readily available. It can be built at a low cost and operated and maintained by the local community with limited outside assistance. Jock will use his expertise to change lives in the developing world and right where you live. In each series, we'll show you “ground zero” of the appropriate technology movement – the classrooms of some of the most prestigious universities in America – to watch the incredible work of tomorrow's greatest minds. And for the viewer at home, we'll show inspiring projects that can be applied in the kitchens, basements and back yards of Main Street America.

The humble origins of Jock Brandis are revealed in the second episode of REPLAN IT. Growing up in rural Canada, Brandis took to engineering at a remarkably young age. In his college years Brandis volunteered on a humanitarian mission to war-torn Africa, where the horrors of genocide left him wary of philanthropy. After honing his mechanical prowess as a technician in the film industry for 30 years, he cautiously returned to Africa on the request of a close friend. This visit would lead him to creating a device that some would call the "holy grail" of sustainable agriculture
