Liza Minnelli to Guest Star as Herself on 'Smash' Season 2

Smash is going all out with big and bold casting choices for season 2, with the likes of Jennifer Hudson on board . Now comes word that the Liza with a Z star Liza Minnelli will be guest starring as herself in an episode titled "The Surprise Party." (An exact air date is unknown at this time.)

"Community" isn't the only NBC show that got a midseason home on Tuesday (Oct. 30).The network has a host of changes to its schedule for early 2013, including the returns of "The Biggest Loser" and "Smash," premiere dates for new series "Deception" (formerly "Infamous"), "1600 Penn" and "Ready for Love" and the start for a new "Celebrity Apprentice.""The Biggest Loser" will be the first show back, launching on Sunday, Jan. 6 before settling into its Monday home at 8 p.m. ET Monday, Jan. 7. Nikki Blonsky Heads to Smash

Smash has tapped another musical veteran for its upcoming season. Nikki Blonsky , who starred in the 2007 film version of Hairspray , has landed a recurring role in NBC's Broadway drama, according to The Hollywood Reporter .  Though there's no word on who she'll be playing, Smash star Wes Brown broke the casting news by tweeting a picture of the actress on set.

We can only imagine how excited Jennifer Hudson must be right now. Vulture has just learned exclusively that Sheryl Lee Ralph has been cast to play her mom on Smash . Ralph originated the role of Dreamgirls divaDeena Jones on Broadway (the part played by Beyonce in the 2006 film). But even more thrilling for J.Hud? Ralph also played the mother of Lauryn Hill’s character in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit , the movie Hudson has publicly declared her all-time favorite film. Sweet! (And also: really ???) Anyways, as previously reported , Hudson will be playing new Smash gal Veronica Moore, a Tony-winning star “who reached [her] Broadway dream but paid a price for it.” No word yet on what kind of mom Ralph’s character Cynthia will be, but it’s probably safe to rule out another Mama Rose-type, considering the Bernadette Peters of it all.
