'Americans' Star Annet Mahendru on This Week's Game-Changing Episode

Spoiler alert! Stay far, far away until you've seen the April 6 episode . Since her first appearance on The Americans , Nina seemed like a character whose story would not have a happy ending. But she quickly became a vital part of the story, creating tense moments as a double and later a triple agent for whom the stakes were always high. Oddly, in her more recent storyline as a prisoner, she finally found some real joy in her selfless attempt to help fellow inmate Anton communicate with his son. Now, four episodes into Season 4, Nina's story has reached its conclusion. Ahead of this week's big episode, Mahendru talked to reporters about her TV work, the portrayal of Russians on TV, and filming that dramatic final scene. On learning her character's fate: "I got the first script [of the season] and then I got a phone call. And, you know, you kind of wait for phone calls from the get-go. It finally came. ... I was angry at [the writers], I loved them, I felt every single thing you could possibly feel." On shooting that scene: "It was mortifying. There's that long walk through the hallway and she wakes up and she's still half asleep. They tell her she's being transferred … she doesn't know … and then, you know, she's being read her death sentence. It's everything an artist wants to do. It was the most intense thing I had to do as an artist." On the inspiration for Nina: "When I jumped into playing Nina I didn't know the extent of the role. I didn't know how long she would live. ... At the end of Season 1 I came across our creator's book ( An Ordinary Spy ). The hero there meets a woman, I guess in similar kind of circumstances, and she really shifts his perspective and he works for the CIA and that’s when I realized how huge, actually, Nina’s life is and this role is, how real it was, that this happened to people. And I think it really made me understand her better. On the role's impact: "It did so many things for me professionally and personally and I feel absolutely blessed that someone sat down and wrote Nina like that. She was something else. … I think I'm a storyteller because I love to continuously learn and expand and shift and find truths and things I didn't think I liked, so that story did that for me." On improv in The Americans : "It's a very dangerous world [the characters inhabit] and besides just every word you say, every blink of an eye or movement you do can give so many things away, so … everything we've said was [scripted]. But we had to work out the subtleties of how you say it, and that was plenty of work for us — the how." On the show's portrayal of Russians: "It's something I feel like has never been done before, to truly make both sides look the same. It wasn't bad guy/good guy." On her pivotal role on the X-Files reboot: "It was really ironic that it was a double death this year. A lot of death. But Sveta died for the kind of reopening of the X-Files and Nina died for also starting something very important for an individual. It was a really difficult season and the greatest season at the same time." The Americans airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. on FX. div.post p { text-align: justify; }
