The Challenge: Battle of the Sexes

Battle of the Sexes is the sixth season of Real World/Road Rules Challenge, airing in 2003. It took place in Montego Bay, Jamaica. In this show, each challenge gave points based on finish, either with a partner or alone. After each challenge, the top three from each team became the "Inner Circle" and voted off whoever they wanted to. The winner of each challenge would earn a "lifesaver" which could be given to a member of either team; the recipient of the "lifesaver" would enjoy total immunity from being voted out, which created many interesting situations.

Series Finale
After a month in Jamaica, it is all down to the final challenge for the $150,000 Chili's dollars! Mark, Colin, and Jamie are going head to head with Lori, Ruthie and Ellen to see whose going to win the Battle of the Sexes. With their losing streak over, the ladies are confident that they have a chance to win... Each team is given a block puzzle as a clue for the mission that is to come. The ladies figure out the puzzle but the guys can't and Mark hopes this isn't a bad sign. After they receive the phone call with details, the teams arrive at the competition course. The game is called "It Takes 3" and will require each trio to work as a team in order to win. The first part of the course is the tri ski slalom, followed by the block-by-block brainteaser, and then the ropes course. No member can advance to the next phase without every person on his or her team completing the obstacle. The horn blows and the mission begins... The guys quickly get in a groove and finish the ski-slalom first. While the ladies are still struggling, the boys get to the block-by-block challenge but can't seem to figure out the mind game. The ladies finish and quickly complete the brainteaser leaving the guys in their dust. The boys continue to struggle as the women have moved on to the ropes course until Colin decides to examine their completed puzzle and copy what they've done. The men don't feel bad for doing what many would consider foul play. The teams are now tied in the last leg of the competition. During the first part of the ropes course, Ellen is worried because she sees Ruthie, superwoman, having trouble crossing the polecat. The guys finish and go on to the tight rope. Colin is nervous about his ankle, but they finish and head to the final leg. As the ladies are just finishing the tight rope, Jamie, Mark and Colin take the zip line and head to the finish line for the win. The ladies finish soon after and are not sad because they know they fought the good fight. Mark gives them credit because they were great competitors throughout the whole time. The only regret Colin has is that Ruthie couldn't win as well. Johnny Mosley then surprises the guys and tells them they also each win a Saturn ion. Both teams are sad their journey is over. As Ruthie explains, The Battle of the Sexes may have been won by the men this time but the truth is that no matter who wins, this battle was about respect.

One of the most entertaining seasons of the challenge where the men battled the women. The way the men played and the way the women played really showed where each team's mind was at, winning and whining, respectively. On the men's team David "Puck" Rainey makes his debut and only appearance on a challenge and surprises everyone doing so much better than anyone thought he'd do along with Mark Long making his second challenge appearance and leading the men's team with Eric Nies. On the women's team Ruthie Alcaide makes her debut as one of the strongest female players on the challenge beating the men several times along with Rachel Robinson who although being possibly even stronger than Ruthie gets voted off from the show due to emotional decisions made by the rest of the women's team. Beth "Osama Beth Laden/Bethasaurus Rex" Stolarzcyk returns for a third time just to be voted off second this time and continues her reign of evil. This is the first season where they have one single host who will go on to be a recurring host in future seasons of the challenge, gold medalist Johnny Moseley, who does a pretty good job at it although sometimes sounding like a robot or robot-like when delivering his speeches. Watch this season, you'll thank me for it.

This was possibly the best version of the Real World/Road Rules Challenge. Pitting the men vs. the women, it had the moments that would make it infamous (Puck spitting on David BEFORE the show even started, cat fights, and even a wedding). This was the Golden Age of MTV reality TV because at this point it was still about the people interacting and not just about getting drunk and partying. The men, being men, took emotions out the equation and decided that the lowest man on the points board would be eliminated - leaving the strongest men left for the finale. The women, bringing emotions into the equation, didn't do that early on and it hurt them causing rifts within the team. All in all, this was an excellent season of competition and is a must watch for "Challenge" fans.
