Jon Cassar Sets the Record Straight About 'The Kennedys'

Jon Cassar, director and producer of seasons 1-7 of '24,' took on a new beast when he wrangled the miniseries 'The Kennedys' onto prime time as director. Inherently contentious and polarizing, documenting the Kennedy family for TV was bound to be a button-pusher and divider of critics. 'The Kennedys' did just that; TV pundits fall on one side of the fence or the other, and viewers either love it or hate it. AOL Television caught up with Cassar to set the record straight about numerous rumors dogging the production and presentation of 'The Kennedys,' from the allegedly doctored viewer numbers to why the History Channel pulled out at the last minute.

'The Kennedys': The Accent Strikes Back

By now, you've probably heard a lot of things about the miniseries 'The Kennedys.' You've likely heard that's it's wildly inaccurate and that's why History Channel dropped it. Or maybe you've heard it spun the other way -- that it's too close to the bone, and the remaining Kennedys fought the production. You're probably aware that Katie Holmes plays the legendary Jackie O. and does a terrible job. If you've been following it very closely, you may also be aware that the series was produced by a conservative (Joel Sturnow, '24') and a whole bunch of spin has been applied to that angle too. All of these things are true, but none of them get the heart of what makes 'The Kennedys' so deliciously bad.

'The Kennedys': Do you even have ReelzChannel?

Though we don't think even our morbid curiosity is enough to make us sit through all eight parts of "The Kennedys" miniseries, we're still planning on touching base with the beleaguered historical drama when it premieres April 3. But can we even watch it?Well, it turns out, after all our mocking of the mysterious ReelzChannel that saved the blacklisted project, a lot of TV viewers actually get the network. A quick trip over to the Reelz website reveals (revealz!) that both major U.S. satellite providers, DirecTV and Dish Network, host the channel (dial to 238 and 299, respectively). As for cable subscribers, that's where it gets a bit tricky. Major providers such as Time Warner Cable, Comcast, AT&T and Verizon do host Reelz -- but not in every market. For that, you'll have to consult the comprehensive, state-by-state Reelz guide. (Spoiler alert: we can already say that if you're in Montana, Wyoming or Colorado,...

Greg Kinnear on The Kennedys Controversy: "It's Been Emotional. It's Had Its Ups and Downs"

Greg Kinnear   sat down with TV Guide Network's Hollywood 411  to discuss   The Kennedy s miniseries, in which he plays President John F. Kennedy, and the controversy surrounding the program's move from History to the Reelz Channel. "Obviously it's been emotional. It's had its ups and downs," Kinnear told Julie Moran. "We thought we were going to air on one channel, and it ended up airing on a different channel.  You know, at the end of the day, the job was the same." Kinnear also weighs in on   Katie Holmes ' portrayal of Jackie Kennedy. "I think she did really well, I mean that's a very, very difficult role to play.  I thought it was brave of her to take the shot." Plus:   Hollywood 411   goes backstage at the Academy of Country Music Awards and looks at its favorite actresses in their 30s, including Angelina Jolie and Christina Applegate.

Look At The Kennedys

Event television it may be but The Kennedys has had a troubled run to the small screen. The miniseries has been clouded by rumours that it was pulled from its US network after pressure from the Kennedy family. For all the controversy, though, it still boasts a Hollywood cast of real pedigree and a seriously compelling story to boot. Just ask Oliver Stone. Offering a behind-the-scenes swirl around The History Channel's recreation of the first family, these stills give a flavour of what to expect. Look! There's Greg Kinnear as JFK, Katie Holmes as Jackie Kennedy and Tom Wilkinson as Joseph Kennedy Sr., boss man of the clan. And, yes, that's Barry Pepper as Bobby Kennedy. Read More...
