Cancellations & Renewals Reactions

Now that the fates of the shows of the new Fall 2014 season have (mostly) been decided, our editors took a minute to reflect on what the networks got right—and what they got wrong.

Alex's Reactions:

  • Glad to see canceled:

    Utopia Utopia

I'm all about trashy reality TV, but this wasn't even entertaining.

  • Glad to see renewed:

Jane the Virgin Jane the Virgin

Jane makes accidental insemination look cool! ....or something.

  • Sad to see canceled:

    Selfie Selfie

Sure, it was goofy... but it didn't deserve to die!

  • Sad to see renewed:

    Madam Secretary Madam Secretary

Tea Leoni is a great actress, but the dialogue is a little cringe-worthy.

Leah's Reactions:

  • Glad to see canceled:

    Utopia Utopia

It was so boring as to be unwatchable!

  • Glad to see renewed:

Jane the Virgin Jane the Virgin

This show is so delightfully kooky that it's just one big smile-athon.

  • Sad to see canceled:

    Selfie Selfie

Another fun show done in by a revolting title. What a shame.

  • Sad to see renewed:

NCIS: New Orleans NCIS: New Orleans

Scott Bakula can do so much better than this generic procedural.

Mony's Reactions:

  • Glad to see canceled:

    Selfie Selfie

Over the top and they're going to run out of Internet jokes very soon. That or there will be 4chan jokes. And memes. I guarantee it.

  • Glad to see renewed:

    Gotham Gotham

The first few episodes have been a bit slow, but Robin Lord Taylor as Cobblepot/the Penguin gives this show life.

  • Sad to see canceled:

Red Band Society* Red Band Society*

Only because I wanted to see Kara not get a heart.

  • Sad to see renewed:

    Black-ish Black-ish

"Oh, look, see, we're just like you." Seriously? That or it's version 2.0 of "The Cosbys"

Morgaine's Reactions:

  • Glad to see canceled:

    Bad Judge Bad Judge

Shows like this exist to be canceled. You'd think they would have learned this a few months ago on the similarly named Bad Teacher.

  • Glad to see renewed:

Jane the Virgin Jane the Virgin

This is the standout show of the fall season - it's cute, wierd, dramatic, funny, mysterious... it really has everything.

  • Sad to see canceled:

    Selfie Selfie

Not too sure about John Cho in this, but the supporting cast is really good!

  • Sad to see renewed:

    Stalker Stalker

Because CBS really needed another procedural. Especially one that is mostly about women getting stalked and murdered. Brutally.

Rachel's Reactions:

  • Glad to see canceled:

Manhattan Love Story Manhattan Love Story

    More like Manhattan Love SNORE-Y.

  • Glad to see renewed:

How to Get Away With Murder How to Get Away With Murder

This pickup was a no-brainer. One of fall's breakout hits and one of the few new shows that I can get excited for each week.

  • Sad to see canceled:

    Selfie Selfie

This series suffered from a poor title, much like last season's Trophy Wife. It wasn't perfect, but it was one of the better new comedies of the season.

  • Sad to see renewed:

    Scorpion Scorpion

Another textbook CBS procedural that is mediocre yet inexplicably popular.

Zaz's Reactions:

  • Glad to see canceled:

Manhattan Love Story Manhattan Love Story

2 not particularly charming protagonists + moderately sexist clichés = mediocre sitcom

  • Glad to see renewed:

    Madam Secretary Madam Secretary

Okay, it's no Good Wife, but I just can't help liking Leoni in this role. We need smart, tough ladies on the wee screen.

  • Sad to see canceled:

    Constantine Constantine

A hot demon hunter may still fall to Friday night ratings terror and this viewer will be sad.

  • Sad to see renewed:

The Mysteries of Laura The Mysteries of Laura

I love Debra Messing AND procedurals, but this show was so terrible that I struggled to get through the first episode.
