Nathaniel Rateliff is a Denver-based singer-songwriter whose mellow, lovely Falling Faster Than You Can Run came out earlier this year. (Actually it came out before that, but got a bigger release this year. Anyway...) By a strange twist of scheduling and fate that involved another artist canceling their Undercover slot, Rateliff and his band actually didn’t have any choice in what song they’d play—which worked out great, considering his love of “The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton.” The song is track one on The Mountain Goats’ indispensable All Hail West Texas, a 2002 album that was reissued by Merge last year. Rateliff had big shoes to fill here, considering how funny, excellent, and heartbreaking the song is, not to mention that The Mountain Goats were responsible for one of the greatest Undercover sessions ever. We think he did a fine job.
