'American Idol': From Stutterer To Singing Star

For the second episode of the new " American Idol ," the focus shifted somewhat away from the bickering on the judges' panel -- though not completely -- and more on the aspiring contestants. And there were some real surprises along the way, including a street musician, a rock-and-roll baker, a recovering anorexic and a man whose parents had never heard him sing. And then there was Lazaro Arbos. Arbos was set up as the big story of the night, getting the final audition spot of the Chicago stop. And it was well deserved. Arbos was 21-years old and has lived with a severe stutter since he was six. It got so bad that he said the other kids didn't want to play with him. At one point, his mother said that she had to talk for him as he was completely unable to. It was hard enough being an immigrant from Cuba, but being unable to speak left him feeling very alone. So he turned to music. While he stammered through his introductions in front of the judges, when he started to sing there was no hint of his stutter. Instead, it was a beautiful voice that belted out "Bridge Over Troubled Water," reminiscent of one Clay Aiken at times. MTV wrote that Arbos stole the show , while TVLine said his ability to sing may well be a miracle , and his story definitely tugs at the heartstrings. Along with 46 others from the Windy City, Arbos will be taking his talent to Hollywood. The "American Idol" train roars on, continuing on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on Fox. http://feeds.huffingtonpost.com/~r/HP/Entertainment/~3/Z37rzDWkbDY/american-idol-lazaro-arbo-stutter-video_n_2501225.html

'American Idol': Minaj-Carey Fight Tour Goes To Chicago

" American Idol " rode a wave of bickering into Chicago. While the episode didn't spotlight the arguing and tension between new judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, it was still clearly there. Several confused contestants had to stand there and watch as the two ladies gave little jabs back and forth during their critiques. At one point Randy Jackson shouted to a contestant who'd made it through to the next round, "Run from these crazy people to Hollywood!" While the women certainly bickered as much as promised in earlier promos, they were also civil at times. Because of that, it's difficult to read how they really felt about one another, but it makes it easier to believe that the feud was not something staged for the show. The eyerolls from Carey alone while Minaj talked to contestants and took over the panel at times certainly seemed genuine. Next week, it gets even worse as we get to the infamous footage that leaked over the summer where Minaj walks off the panel in a huff. But is all this drama helping the show in the ratings? Not so far. The show returned down in the ratings from last year to its lowest in-season premiere yet -- the first season ran in the summer. Entertainment Weekly reports that executives are happy with the numbers , though. While "NCIS" beat it in total viewers, it still had the highest-rated debut of any singing competition this season so far and is among the top performers still. "American Idol" continues on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on Fox. TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser. http://feeds.huffingtonpost.com/~r/HP/Entertainment/~3/Y567z4zsFe0/american-idol-minaj-carey-chicago-video_n_2501353.html
