TV ratings: 'Modern Family' premiere down a bunch but still tops Wednesday, 'SVU' premiere rises

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2013"Modern Family" reclaimed its spot at Wednesday's top show among adults 18-49, but its Season 5 premiere was down significantly from last year's debut. That was pretty much the theme of the night: The premieres of nearly every returning show came in below their debuts last year. The lone exception was "Law & Order: SVU," which paid off last season's finale cliffhanger and rose significantly over its 2012 premiere."Modern Family" fell by close to 3 million viewers and more than a point among adults 18-49 vs. last year. "The Middle" and "Nashville" were also off for ABC. New comedy "Back in the Game" pulled OK numbers for its debut, holding most of its lead-in. "Criminal Minds" and "CSI" were each down a little from a year ago for CBS, and NBC's "Revolution" predictably took a big hit compared to last year's "Voice"-aided premiere. On the (small) upside, "Revolution"... http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/09/tv-ratings-modern-family-premiere-down-a-bunch-but-still-tops-wednesday-svu-premiere-rises.html

'Back in the Game': Will the James Caan comedy get another turn at bat?

The simplest way of explaining "Back in the Game," the new ABC comedy starring Maggie Lawson and James Caan, is to say that it's a modern-day version of "The Bad News Bears." Only in this case, the coach is a woman, and the crotchety old man is her father.Does it work? For the most part, yes. "Back in the Game" isn't an ambitious show, but it does accomplish its goal of simple, cheerful comedy about a group of misfits coming together. Good acting -- more or less a given with a name like James Caan -- and mostly likable characters keep the show going along with just enough laughs to make it all worthwhile. This is not to say the show is perfect -- far from it. In the premiere, plot advancement relies too much on all-too-familiar characters. There's the effeminate gay kid, the fat kid, et cetera. Even Terry the coach (Lawson) has a standard... http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/09/back-in-the-game-will-the-james-caan-comedy-get-another-turn-at-bat.html

'Back in the Game' premiere: Maggie Lawson likes being 'in the dirt with a bunch of kids'

Co-starring in one series hasn't prevented Maggie Lawson from doing another. The actress has been able to remain involved as police detective Juliet O'Hara in most episodes of the upcoming Season 8 of "Psych," the USA comedy-mystery, while also playing the female lead as the ABC sitcom"Back in the Game" premieres Wednesday (Sept. 25).The new show casts her as a single mom who becomes the coach of her son's (Griffin Gluck) Little League team ... despite her long-standing dislike of sports, one of the byproducts of her estrangement from the ex-ballplayer father (James Caan) she struggles to reunite with."It's really exciting," the pleasant Lawson tells Zap2it of her dual series duty. "It's sort of working different muscles."The wonderful thing about 'Psych' is that the writers have evolved those characters in such a way that almost every year, it's felt like we were delving into something different, whether it was something emotional or Juliet was becoming a badass.... http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/09/back-in-the-game-premiere-maggie-lawson-likes-being-in-the-dirt-with-a-bunch-of-kids.html
