'Boardwalk Empire' Death: Yep, They Went There

(Spoiler alert: If you haven't seen the second season of "Boardwalk Empire" because you're planning to watch it in nickel-matinee installments on Atlantic Avenue, don't read this.) Jimmy Darmody, we hardly knew ye. Well, we sort of knew ye. We saw you rise from right-hand man to "Boardwalk Empire" mastermind Nucky Thompson to become, ever so briefly, the crime boss of Atlantic City. We flashed back to your World War I and Princeton days. And we saw that one time you had sex with your mom.

The Boardwalk-ing Dead

Just when it looked like estranged Atlantic City gangsters Nucky Thompson ( Steve Buscemi ) and Jimmy Darmody (an Emmy-worthy  Michael Pitt ) were getting the old band back together, the Nuckster ruthlessly gunned down his prodigal ex-protégé. 'Boardwalk Empire' Finale: Nucky's Showdown With Jimmy (VIDEO)

It was a showdown two seasons in the making, and finally in this week's season finale, it was Nucky versus Jimmy on 'Boardwalk Empire' (Sun., 9PM ET on HBO). He was the hair apparent to whatever kind of thrown Nucky sits on in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, but it just wasn't enough for Jimmy. Unfortunately, his ambition was more than his intellect could handle, and he found himself in over his head.

'Boardwalk Empire' Creator Justifies Shocking Ending, Shares Ideas for Season 3

Talking about the scene in season 2 finale that leaves fans outraged, Terence Winter says, 'It would be a cheat for us to say, 'We want to keep our beloved character Jimmy Darmody alive'.'

Boardwalk Empire’s Michael Shannon on the State of Agent Van Alden’s Soul

When we spoke to Michael Shannon this time last year , he expressed some disappointment that his devoutly Christian Boardwalk Empire character, Agent Nelson Van Alden, had fallen so quickly from grace. During the second season, Van Alden has tried to delay payment on his sins, mainly by hiding the woman he impregnated in hopes of passing the baby on to his sterile wife. In the end, he lost everything — and after his dramatic escape last episode, we're not sure if he's going to embrace single parenthood or resume his descent into depravity. Shannon, who's currently shooting Man of Steel, spoke to us late last night about the state of Van Alden's soul leading up to Sunday night's finale. Read More...
