The Most Important Shows on TV: Week of September 11, 2017

Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed — or at least be able to fake it — with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV.   The Mindy Project (Final Season Premiere) Tuesday at 3 am on Hulu Why: The Mindy Project has certainly had its ups and downs, falling into the same overly drawn out will they?/won't they? trap that many romantic comedies have fallen into before it. Now starting its final season, Mindy has eloped with Ben (played by the adorable Bryan Greenberg), although based on the trailer there's already trouble in paradise. Since it has already been announced that Chris Messina will be back again for some of this season, I guess we'll have to put up with the Mindy/Danny will they?/won't they? drama yet again, but with only 10 episodes left, we've gotta see how things turn out! There will also be a bunch of favorite guest stars returning, including Adam Pally, Rhea Perlman, Mark Duplass, and Glenn Howerton, as well as big-name new guests stars like Reese Witherspoon. And, even though Mindy has been showing its age, if we get even one more episode like the amazing "Mindy Lahiri Is a White Man", I'll be glad I stuck with it through the end. Prepare to talk about: How Danny is a Mr. Big and Ben is an Aidan; how much we're going to miss Mindy's amazing wardrobe; how much we're gonna miss Morgan.   Broad City (Season Premiere) Wednesday at 10 pm on Comedy Central Why: Don't mistake Broad City for just being a stoner sitcom. While it's not yet getting any award-recognition , an argument can easily be made that it is one of the best comedies on TV. During this season (from which the show will be returning from its longest hiatus ever of nearly a year and a half), for the first time, the show takes on a season other than the grueling summer; it's winter in NYC. Interestingly, much of the show was shot earlier last year, before the election, operating under the assumption that Hillary Clinton (beloved by Abbi and Ilana) would be president. When this did not occur, much of the season was rewritten to be more reflective of Abbi and Ilana's current mood, including most notably, an ongoing plot regarding Ilana's inability to orgasm following Trump's win. Also expect a bunch of big name guest stars including RuPaul, Shania Twain, Steve Buscemi, Sandra Bernhard, Mike Birbiglia, Jane Curtin, Susie Essman, Peri Gilpin, Alysia Reiner, Amy Ryan, Constance Shulman, and Wanda Sykes. Prepare to talk about: How Ilana's fashion in particular has been updated for the winter; bleeping Trump (no really, they bleep out his name).   The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Sunday at 8 pm ET / 5 pm PT on CBS Why: Awards shows aren't for everyone, but if you're a lover of television, the Emmys are by far one of the most exciting nights of the year! While hosts can be hugely successful (Ellen!) or big busts (never forget the reality show hosts as hosts year), usually when late night hosts host - including Stephen Colbert this year - it's a safer bet that they will be successful. There's also some solid competition this year, particularly in the Drama categories as Game of Thrones is not in the running this year. It's also exciting when a bunch of new shows have entered the race, including The Handmaid's Tale (a favorite in a number of categories), Westworld , This Is Us , and Atlanta on the Comedy side (although realistically Veep will probably still pick up Best Comedy). Also expect newcomer Big Little Lies to clean up in the Limited Series/Miniseries categories, although the best part of the Emmys is that there are always surprises. Check out all of the nominations here . Prepare to talk about: The dresses; who was snubbed; how no matter what happens they can't f--- it up like those dummies at the Oscars did!   Rachel is the product manager of SideReel, and while she enjoyed This Is Us , she will be appalled if it wins the Emmy for Best Drama. div.post p { text-align: justify; }
