Matt FX on the 'Open Secret' That Makes the 'Broad City' Soundtrack So Good

One of the many reasons Broad City resonates so strongly with its devoted audience is its music. From the relatively unknown Latin-flavored hip-hop beat that opens each episode to the huge pop songs featured during extended sequences, the show's soundtrack perfectly captures the energy of Abbi Abrams, Ilana Wexler, and New York City. And the man responsible for creating Broad City 's sonic universe is Matt "FX" Feldman (pictured above, second from left). Just 25, Feldman has been in the game since 2010, when he had what he describes as a "fluke experience" supervising music for MTV's controversial remake of the U.K. series Skins . The series was canceled after just one season, but a connection Feldman made there led to his Broad City job. He explained: "Out of the blue the assistant editor of that first show called me four years later and was like … 'I'm working on this show, it's not going well with the music guy, and it's going to air in five weeks. Can you come in and meet the girls?'" Despite the time crunch, Feldman was all in. "I grew up in New York, I went to high school with those [kinds of] girls ... choosing the music was a very natural thing." Feldman also is music supervisor for another Comedy Central show, Detroiters , in addition to Hulu's Difficult People . Broad City often is praised for balancing mainstream hits with music from unknown artists, something that Feldman admits is both a passion and a necessity. "A kind of open secret, I think, is that we get one or two known songs a year because that's all we can afford," he said during a Q&A with reporters at this weekend's Colossal Clusterfest in San Francisco. In Season 1, it was Drake's "Started from the Bottom" (during that incredible bank entrance). The next season featured Abbi dancing throughout her apartment in the buff to Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory." Feldman couldn't say what the new season would bring, but he did tease the "throwback" song selected for the trailer, which is now live: (Also at Clusterfest, Broad City debuted the first episode of its new season and it was epic. Season 4 begins airing on Comedy Central on Aug. 23.)
