'Community's' Donald Glover on 'Dungeons & Dragons': 'It's fun to play God'

"Community" is coming out of a string of themed episodes and giving us another so-called "bottle episode" on Thursday's (Feb. 3) episode. This time they're going into "Dungeons & Dragons" territory in order to help a suicidal classmate, Fat Neil, find his happy again. We were on-set during the shooting of the episode and had a chance to talk to Donald Glover (in the anthropology classroom!), who says he didn't play the role-playing game as a kid, because he wasn't allowed to."['Dungeons & Dragons' sounds] so awesome," Glover tells Zap2it. "To have a character for a long time and build it. There's something about all those things like Pokémon, Nano Pets, you're just playing God. And it's fun to play God for a little bit."For Glover, who grew up Jehovah's Witness, anything that had to do with magic wasn't allowed. The interesting part is Glover's character, Troy, is also Jehovah's Witness in the show. So, how does... http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2011/02/communitys-donald-glover-on-dungeons-and-dragons-its-fun-to-play-god.html

'Community' EP Dan Harmon talks saving money with 'Advanced Dungeons & Dragons'

If there hadn't been lavish Halloween and stop-motion-animated Christmas episodes of NBC's Thursday comedy "Community," there might actually be dragons and elaborate costumes and special effects in "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons,' airing Feb. 3 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.As it is, there's not even a deck of fancy decorated game cards."No cards," series creator Dan Harmon tells Zap2it, "but dice and just make-believe."In the episode, Jeff (Joel McHale) takes an interest in a depressed fellow student, nicknamed "Fat Neil" (Charley Koontz), who enjoys role-playing games. When Neil's spirits seem dangerously low, the study group invites him to play a game of Dungeons & Dragons, with Abed (Danny Pudi) as the Dungeonmaster. But when Pierce (Chevy Chase) discovers he's been excluded from the game -- even though Senor Chang (Ken Jeong) is there -- all hell breaks loose. The episode takes place mainly inside the study room at the library, and while "Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas" translated an inner... http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2011/02/community-ep-dan-harmon-talks-saving-money-with-advanced-dungeons-dragons.html

TV ratings: 'Idol,' NBC comedies hold the line Thursday; 'Bones' gets a boost

Fast National ratings for Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011Thursday's "American Idol" held pretty steady with its performance last week, losing only a handful of viewers and a tenth of a point in the 18-49 demographic. "Bones" scored its best numbers of the season, while NBC's comedy lineup dipped slightly but basically held onto the audience it drew last week.FOX averaged 17.2 million viewers and a 9.9 rating/15 share in households, a slight improvement on last week's numbers thanks to the "Bones" bump. CBS (9.6 million, 6.0/10) was a distant second. ABC and NBC finished in a dead heat for third with 5.2 million viewers each (ABC scored a 3.2/5 in households to NBC's 3.0/5). The CW drew 3.05 million viewers and a 1.9/3 as it returned to original episodes.FOX also dominated the adults 18-49 demo with a 5.8 rating, more than doubling the average of its closest competitor. That would be NBC, whose 2.5 rating was... http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2011/01/tv-ratings-idol-nbc-comedies-hold-the-line-thursday-bones-gets-a-boost.html

'Community's' Joel McHale on the 'American Idol' challenge: 'We've been working out'

"Community" returned last week with a lot of pressure placed on it. Not only is the show kicking off NBC's new comedy block, but TV's No. 1 show, "American Idol," returned to the same time slot on Thursday nights. When Zap2it was on-set at "Community" before the midseason return, we got a chance to talk "American Idol" with star Joel McHale, who plays the cool Jeff Winger, and he says the crew is ready for the "Idol" challenge."Yes, we're ready to take them on," he jokes. "We have been working out. Preseason's been great. Ready to take them on."McHale has two views on the reality show. On the one hand, it poses a ratings challenge for the NBC show, but it also presents some new material for his other gig hosting E!'s "The Soup."  "With the new line of judges," he says. "It will be fresh for 'The Soup,' which is great."McHale is also not shy... http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2011/01/communitys-joel-mchale-on-the-american-idol-challenge-weve-been-working-out.html
