The upcoming fourth season of Damages has added veteran actor Judd Hirsch in a key role. Hirsch ( Numbers, Taxi ) will play a former mentor of Patty’s (Glenn Close); a man who took her under his wing during her first job out of law school. But his situation has changed greatly over time and he now spends his time "at the bottom of a bottle." Chris Messina has landed a key role on the upcoming season of Damages . The actor will portray a high school acquaintance of Ellen's and a former soldier. When the series picks up this summer, Messina's character will be working for a private security firm in Afghanistan. After a trademark twisty season, Damages' 90-minute finale (tonight at 10/9c on FX) will finally reveal who murdered Tom Shayes (Tate Donovan). But the more important question, according to co-creators and executive producers Todd A. Kessler and Daniel Zelman, is this: How will Patty (Glenn Close) and Ellen (Rose Byrne) move forward after Tom's death? "The most important part of the show for us is Ellen and Patty - their relationship and what makes them tick," Zelman says. The third season of the network's mystery has been receiving abysmal ratings. Damages has been averaging under a million viewers per episode (yikes!) and in the key 18-49 demographic it's only managed a .2. Yeah, that is as bad as you think it is. That's why FX decided to pull the plug on their critically acclaimed series and not renew it for a third season. And who can blame them, right? Of course, we could actually see a fourth season of Damages, but not on FX. In a recent trend of cancelled shows getting saved by other networks, satellite provider DirecTV is considering picking up the series, and co-producing with Sony. This is very similar to what happened to the football drama Friday Night Lights last year. Sure, it was a great show, but ratings couldn't keep it up, so DirecTV swooped in and saved it. Read more
