Downton Abbey Reviews & Ratings

60 minutes

Set in the fictional Downton Abbey, stately home of the Earl of Grantham, early in the reign of King George V, during the two years prior to the Great War and commencing with news of the sinking of the Titanic, an event that triggers much of the storyline. It follows the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants.

Very nice show for fans of period costume bits and British aristocracy. I thought the first seasons included better plot lines and maybe more controversial topics than later episodes. As with many very long running tv shows, the the story arcs seemed to flatten out and become rather soapy. Still, by the time they had run out of interesting ideas, I was already seriously hooked on the gorgeous dresses and props of the early twentieth century they presented by the cartload, so I couldn’t have stopped watching anyway ^^ All in all, while it wasn't exactly thrilling, it was still always very entertaining.

A truly fantastic show, I am sad to see it go. There is a wonderful depth to the characters represented by differences in class and circumstances. You care what happens to them, which can be hard for a show to create. It is also a good representation of what life can bring, the good and bad, regardless of your station in life.

Acquaint yourself with the fascinating members of the aristocratic Crawley family, the extensive staff that work for them, and witness how personal and historical events affect their lives and the era they live in. The writers of this series are so accomplished that every character is so well defined that it’s impossible to believe they exist only on film. If I had to single out the person that most amuses me, it would have to be Maggie Smith, who literally steals every scene she’s in with her demeanour and wit. The scripts, sets and costumes are all faultless, and the acting is superlative. With beautiful stories ranging from enduring love and friendship, to heartbreak and war, everything is tastefully written and filmed, then served on a silver platter. There are truly no words adequate enough to describe just how wonderful this show is, and what a joy it is to watch. Take a step back in time and immerse yourself in the glorious story telling that is Downton Abbey. You may never want to leave.

I started watching this show after the last season started on TV as I heard a lot off talk about it. People were saying they couldn't wait to see it. I didn't think it would be my sort off thing as set in the olden days with me being only 32 but after Poldark I thought if I liked that and it was set in the olden days I may like this and with all the talk about it from young and old I thought why not try it and by half way through season 1 I was hooked.I would highly recommend this show to all ages. I love seeing how they lived years ago.

I can't say enough good things about this show. I just love it. I love the characters, and I love the time period. It's just a winner all around!

So far, I am in love! I rented the first season, finished it in a day! I went back to rent the second and of course they didn't have it in! Ugh, I shall be back!

Beautiful show and really interesting but it goes on a little too long. I'm glad to have experienced it, but it's passing will be wanted. Let it go before it falls downhill.
