A design competition from executive producer Ellen DeGeneres features contestants trying to win a cash prize by designing a unique piece of furniture with help from an expert carpenter.
In the series premiere of Ellen's Design Challenge, six furniture designers from all over America arrive at a workshop where they meet their carpenters and receive a gift from Ellen that they must transform into their first piece of furniture. During the build tensions run high between one of the designers and her carpenter while another designer struggles to fix a structural flaw before time runs out. Series judges, Christiane Lemieux and Amanda Dameron are joined by world renowned furniture manufacturer, Jason Chauncey as they critique the designers' creations and decide who will be the first one to go home.
This is a surprisingly good "creative reality" show. You know the drill - a bunch of folks are tasked with creating something in a very short time. And then stuff happens. In this case, they create furniture. Tables, chairs, desks, functional art pieces. Some of the creations are downright impressive, and I want to create them myself. The hardware store is calling -- that's what I'd call an inspirational show! Oh yeah, Ellen is there too. She shows up from time to time, but isn't really an integral part of the show. That's fine, the judges and the contestants make it work.
