TV ratings: 'New Year's Rockin' Eve' rules the final night of 2012

Fast National ratings for Monday, Dec. 31, 2012Those not out celebrating on New Year's Eve overwhelmingly chose to watch ABC and its annual "New Year's Rockin' Eve" special. The prime-time portion of the Times Square coverage was the night's top show, and a special honoring the late Dick Clark also scored well. The prime-time lineup gave ABC its best New Year's Eve in 12 years.ABC averaged 10.7 million viewers and a 5.5 rating/10 share in households for the night, beating second-place CBS (4 million, 2.5/4) by more than 6 million viewers. NBC (3.3 million came in third. FOX was fourth with 2.95 million viewers and a 1.8/3, and The CW (1.3 million, 0.8/1) trailed. ABC also dominated the adults 18-49 race with a 3.1 rating. No other network got above 1.0 -- NBC averaged 0.9 and CBS 0.8. CBS renews 'How I Met Your Mother' -- with full cast -- for season 9

CBS has renewed its veteran comedy, "How I Met Your Mother," for a somewhat surprising season 9. Fortunately for the continuity of the fairly serialized sitcom, all of the cast members -- including Jason Segel -- have agreed to return for at least one more year.As first reported by Deadline.com, "HIMYM" is unofficially set for another season thanks to negotiations with the cast and producers working out positively for CBS. Cast deals were finalized just before a Friday (Dec. 21) deadline, despite rumors that Segel was unwilling to continue on the show.Currently in the final year of contracts and the show's license deal with the network, the future of "How I Met Your Mother" always depended on the cooperation of those involved. Fast National ratings for Monday, Dec. 17, 2012The series finale of "Gossip Girl" scored the show's biggest audience of the season -- although that only translates to about a million and a half viewers. Still, the finale and the hour-long clip show that preceded it gave The CW its best Monday performance in 15 months.Elsewhere Monday, "The Voice" was up over last week and was the night's top show in viewers and adults 18-49. A preview of NBC's new comedy "1600 Penn," though, lost close to half its lead-in and posted only mediocre numbers.
