12.7 and 11.4 million viewers tuned into the premieres of Modern Family and Cougar Town respectively on ABC last night. For a network that has had historic difficulty launching 30 minute comedies, this is fantastic news! CBS was also a ratings winner last night with the premieres of Criminal Minds (15.4 million) and CSI: NY (14.6 million), as well as the return of their Wednesday comedies, The New Adventures of Old Christine (7.7 mil) and Gary Unmarried (7.4 mil). Over on NBC, Mercy debuted to a respectable 8.2 million viewers, finishing second in the 8PM hour behind Dancing with the Stars on ABC. Slightly disappointing for the net was the return of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit , which was down considerably from last year, with only 8.4 million viewers. At 10PM, ABC also debuted new series Eastwick , which picked up a decent 8.5 million viewers, easily beating The Jay Leno Show on NBC (6.4 mil). The biggest loser of the night: The Beautiful Life on The CW , with an embarrassing 1.1 million viewers. Have you entered our Fall TV Death Pool on Facebook yet? I'd say TBL is a prime candidate for an early cancellation... What premieres did you watch last night? Ratings Source
Between Dr. House's sarcasm, McDreamy's charm and Addison's inter-hospital love life, viewers love them some doctors. But with the end of ER, NBC hopes to fill its medical void with a team of no-nonsense nurses in Mercy . "It's the part that you usually don't see on television," executive producer and creator Liz Heldens ( Friday Night Lights ) says. "It's the nurses [who] are the ones who pick up the pieces after a diagnosis is made." Taylor Schilling plays Veronica Callahan, a nurse who has returned to Mercy Hospital after a tour in Iraq. "She's tough, but she's also trying to get by," says Schilling. "I think she carries with her a truth or a point of view that the other nurses do not share." Veronica's marriage is in shambles after affairs by both her and her husband. But things get even more complicated when the doctor she cheated with in Iraq returns to the hospital in the premiere. "I know that Veronica's committed to her husband and is really trying to make that work, but there's the distraction of this other man at work on a daily basis," says Schilling. "Both men are really important to her, and in a way, almost serve different needs. So it's a really interesting dilemma." According to Schilling, Mercy will likely be more relatable than other medical dramas. "[It's about] real people trying to get through their lives, outside of work and inside of work," said Schilling. "The hospital is important [in that it's] where their lives are taking place, but it's more about the characters navigating their lives." Mercy premieres Wednesday at 8/7c on NBC. Source Here
* Cougar Town (9:30/8:30c ABC) Lest ye think this new comedy is all about older women chasing younger men - though there is that - the producers, including Scrubs' Bill Lawrence, conveniently dodge that cliche tying it to a high-school football team's nickname. As for that first premise, it could also describe fortysomething divorcee Jules Cobb (Courteney Cox) being figuratively chewed up and spit out by a big cat called life. Should she get back out there and date? Well, she's just not sure, and, in tonight's premiere, neither is her mortified teenage son. * Modern Family (9/8c ABC) "Family. Redefined." That's an old tagline for The Sopranos, but TV familial units have been evolving since the beginning, and this new comedy is living proof. Shot mockumentary-style, the series follows the unusual kinship of the Pritchett clan, led by patriarch Jay (Ed O'Neill), whose much younger wife (Sofia Vergara) has a son of her own. Revealing more would spoil the fun of peeling back the layers one at a time, and the undercurrent of warmth at work here makes it one of the season's most promising sitcoms. * Mercy (8/7c NBC) The highs and lows of three nurses at a hospital in Jersey City, N.J., are charted in this new medical drama. The series centers on Veronica Callahan (newbie Taylor Schilling), an adept caregiver who lands work at Mercy Hospital after a tour of duty in Iraq. But Veronica's love life is ready to flatline: Her marriage is splintering, and a tempting new doctor only complicates matters. Veronica's nursing colleagues include a swaggering gal pal (Jaime Lee Kirchner) and a naive rookie (Michelle Trachtenberg). Although this is yet another entry in the crowded hospital-drama genre, the gritty New Jersey locations and an attractive young cast make for good medicine. * The New Adventures of Old Christine (8/7c CBS) Last season's hilarious finale ended in a cliffhanger that left a couple of key questions unanswered. Are new Christine and Richard getting married and is Barb being deported? It's not giving anything away to say the answers are no and yes. As the fifth season begins, the wedding is off and Barb is in the Bahamas after being booted out of the States. But not to worry. Christine and Matthew fly down to help Barb obtain an illegal visa so she can return to the U.S. * Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (9/8c NBC) After a hiatus filled with reports on hard-fought contract negotiations, Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni are returning for the series' 11th season, albeit on a new night and at a new time. And they've got some reluctant company tonight: Off. Nate Kendall ( Prison Break 's Wentworth Miller), a cop who likes to do his things his own way. He helps a rape victim, then must stay on the case after by-the-book Executive ADA Sonya Paxton (Christine Lahti) suspects a serial rapist is behind things. Source Here

Parenthood substitute Mercy is giving out plenty of clips from the season premiere which is happening on September 23. The compilation of clips starts out with an unexpected situation when Veronica was having breakfast and a car came screeching behind her. In a situation which is critical, the nurse is forced to take immediate medical action with limited instruments. The rest of the clips show others like the arrival of a new nurse, Chloe who is played by Michelle Trachtenberg. Chloe is a newbie who just graduated from Columbia University on top of her class. What she lacks of is the field experience like having the guts to pull the plug out of a brain dead old man. Beside chronicling the life of the nurses at Mercy Hospital, the show also takes the focus on Veronica's personal life. She has just returned from a tour in Iraq where she met Dr. Chris Sands. Instant attraction quickly occurs but problem is, Veronica is a married woman who is trying to mend her relationship with her husband Mike. Released alongside the clips is a behind the scene featurette that gives away character description from the no-nonsense Veronica to head-turner Sonia. "Mercy" is put in the Fall schedule after "Parenthood" is suffering from production delay. Maura Tierney who was cast as one of the lead characters on "Parenthood" had to undergo breast cancer treatment. A re-casting is underway with Helen Hunt being one of the candidates. Source & Clips
