ORPHAN BLACK SERIES 2 OH MY GOSH. There is seriously no show on TV that is as well written, acted and represented as Orphan Black. It’s one of the few shows left on TV that genuinely surprises me. So here is a review and some thoughts on Orphan Black series 2 This season has really been a roller coaster of character development, plot twists and cliffhangers NEARLY EVERY EPISODE. From the series opener (where Sarah showed us once again how she’s more than “just a clone”, adapting to any situation effortlessly) right up to the finale with Sarah and Kira’s escape from the Dyad and the revelation of Project Castor. Series 2 focuses on developing both sides of the Project Leda story including the neolutionists/Dyad institutes and the Proletheans distinct personalities and back stories. Each organization has it’s own members, resources and ways of getting the clones to do what they want and it was fascinating to see the differences and occassionally similarities between the two groups. It was great to see more of the Prolethean side of the matter this series, and introducing us to new characters of Gracie and Mark (who I have a feeling will become very important in series 3). The Dyad was developed as complex multi- corporate organization and I liked over the series how Leekie, Marion and Rachel all were battling for overall control of the Dyad’s research interests. All the main clones Sarah, Alison, Cosima, Rachel and Helena each had their own story lines that whilst were interwoven, stood alone as distinct character arcs, furthering each women’s character as unique and not just defintie by their genetics. It was great to find out more about the lives of the new clones Jennifer, Tony and Rachel and see the true scale of Project Leda. Rachel especially has been developed beautifully as a character this season, showing us the reasoning behind her ruthlessness as well as her emotional side at times. But what really makes Orphan Black great is it’s fabulous cast of supporting actors who can all interact uniquely with the individual clones Tatiana Maslany plays. Mrs S., Felix, Delphine, Cal and Kira especially all are super at facing the issues that arise head on and support the clones in any way they can, helping all the members of clone club feel like a family. There’s too many highlights to point out in this review but all the issues raised by the show are truly inspiring: nature vs nurture debate, ethical issues of cloning, science vs religion, sexuality, parenting, family and mental stability are all presented in an intriguing and relatable way. It’s very thought provoking television that treats it’s audience intelligently! Overall I could literally go on about this show for DAYS, it’s flawless cast and brilliant writing of well rounded and human characters, combined with a thriller style plot and perfect pacing easily makes it one of the smartest and most satisfying sci-fis/dramas I’ve watched in a long time.
