TNT's 'Perception' And Paranoid Schizophrenia

" Perception ," the TNT series about a neuroscience professor with paranoid schizophrenia, debuted Monday night (July 9), bringing the mental condition into the public eye. On the show, viewers are introduced to Daniel, played by "Will and Grace"'s Eric McCormack, whose hallucinations from his condition help him to solve crimes. According to the National Institutes of Health, schizophrenia is experienced by about 1.1 percent of adults in the United States. Among people with schizophrenia, 60 percent have used some sort of health care service to help with their condition, and 64.3 percent have used any sort of service to help with their condition. People with paranoid-type schizophrenia believe that someone is out to get them , and they are unable to be convinced otherwise. Meet Eric McCormack's Shizophrenic Crime Solver In 'Perception' Premiere

Eric McCormack showed fans a whole different side to himself with the premiere of his new crime procedural " Perception " (Mon., 10 p.m. ET on TNT). In it, McCormack plays Dr. Daniel Pierce, a brilliant scientist and professor who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. The show takes viewers inside Pierce's mind, seeing his hallucinations alongside so that they -- like him -- can't always be sure what is real. It's the unique twist this show is putting on the otherwise tried-and-true procedural format, and it will live or die based solely on McCormack's ability to sell the character. He's certainly off to a solid start, with several critics saying he's the best thing about the show. The New York Daily News says of McCormack and the show, "Any shortcomings here are not his." They then go on to list several shortcomings. "Maybe at a certain point it won't feel like all this is a little too gimmicky," their review said in its conclusion about the show. It's certainly a fun way to look at crime, with McCormack establishing the genesis of what could be a very compelling character to watch. Also teased with intrigue is former student turned FBI agent -- and the reason Pierce gets called in on the secases -- Kate Moretti. Played by Rachel Leigh Cook , Moretti is impulsive, a little reckless, and perhaps just as unpredictable as Pierce; only in a completely different way. McCormack spoke with HuffPost TV about the attraction to this character.Catch new episodes of "Perception" every Monday at 10 p.m. ET on TNT. TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser. http://feeds.huffingtonpost.com/~r/HP/Entertainment/~3/T3n6TLctUvc/perception-premiere-eric-mccormack-schizophrenic-video_n_1661026.html

It's a matter of 'Perception' for Eric McCormack and Rachael Leigh Cook

In Shakespeare's "Hamlet," the ghost of the Prince of Denmark's slain father appears and sends his son off on the trail of an uncle who became king through murder.Dr. Daniel Pierce (Eric McCormack), the neuroscience professor who is the lead character in the TNT drama "Perception," premiering Monday, July 9, doesn't exactly see dead people, but he does see people who aren't really there -- and sometimes they're helpful in solving the crimes brought to him by a former student, FBI agent Kate Moretti (Rachael Leigh Cook).Pierce has paranoid schizophrenia, which causes hallucinations and delusions. But at the same time, he has a keen intellect and knowledge of how the human brain works, which allows him to discern patterns and underlying motives in human behavior.Against medical advice, Pierce decides to go off his medications and use his hallucinations to help give him an insight into crimes that his conscious mind may not be able to... http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2012/07/its-a-matter-of-perception-for-eric-mccormack-and-rachael-leigh-cook.html
