Ash and friends are getting ready to leave for Opelucid City when they find out that the Opelucid Gym has closed temporarily. Before they can decide where to go next, they are stopped by a butler who says that Cilan's presence is requested by Mr. Hatterly, a wealthy man who lives in the neighboring town. Upon arrival at the mansion they discover that Mr. Hatterly has invited Cilan and another Connoisseur named Ricard to help him choose a first Pokémon for his daughter Marigold. They two Connoisseurs then compete to see who can find out what Pokémon is best suited for Marigold. Meanwhile, Burgundy is also in town and is trying to get into the mansion so she can help the family out.
