Prime Suspect Reviews & Ratings

120 minutes

The series focuses on a no-nonsense female Detective Chief Inspector (DCI), Jane Tennison (played by Helen Mirren), who is attached to the Metropolitan Police, initially at the fictional Southampton Row police station. It is set mostly in London and the outer areas, with series 5 being set in Manchester. In later series, she is promoted to Detective Superintendent and reassigned to rotating duties, beginning with the vice squad in Soho. The series shows how she survives and negotiates in a male-dominated profession determined to see her fail with the support of her boss, Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Kernan and loyal Sgt. Richard Haskons. As mentioned in the behind-the-scenes documentary that accompanies "The Final Act" DVD, Jackie Malton, who was one of only four female DCIs at the time this series began, acted as an advisor to the writers.

Like her or loathe her, you had to respect the he** out of Jane Tennyson, she gave everything to the job and Helen Mirren had a tough time in the press as they didn't like, at that time, a strong female lead - like most of Tennyson's colleagues. I remember thinking that I just didn't know how she managed to put up with all the misogyny but for her it was about the work, helping people, not holding hands but solving murders and putting people away for them. Amazing character actors throughout all seasons. Running for 7 seasons itself tells you how good it was. A true before-its-time show.

Helen Mirren doing tv. Wow! She's a great actress and this was a great show for her. Enjoyed it and watched the episodes more than once. There aren't too many of them so binging on it is easy.

Helen Mirren stole this show. She was and still is a fantastic actress. It is not a show per se, as it had only two episodes but the level of intensitiy, the tension towards a female inspector, the case - it was more then just good.
If you liked The Fall with Gillian Anderson, then consider this (in a way) as the prequel to it and watch it if you get the chance. Even after 24 years, this show still is worth watching.
