Emmy Awards 2017: 9 Biggest Snubs and Surprises

It's hard out there for an Emmy voter. Trying to limit a list of the year's best television performers and shows to just five or six spots is insane. And yet, it must be done. This year's Emmy nominees include some welcomed surprises, some disappointing autopilot picks, and some outrageous snubs. (See the full list of nominees here .)   Surprise! Milo Ventimiglia, Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series for This Is Us Fellow This Is Us nominees Sterling K. Brown, Ron Cephas Jones, and (bizarrely) Chrissy Metz were expected, but Ventimiglia's was more of a longshot. The NBC hit received 11 nominations.   Snub! Rachel Bloom, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Once again, Emmy voters proved they are allergic to The CW, home to two of television's sharpest and funniest comedies, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Jane the Virgin . What more does Gina Rodriguez have to do?! Bloom did receive a nomination for songwriting, however, along with Adam Schlesinger and Jack Dolgen.   Snub and Surprise! Carrie Coon, Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie for Fargo Fargo is beloved by the Television Academy, so Coon's nomination here isn't a total surprise. But it is somewhat shocking that she was recognized for this role and not the three seasons of exceptional work on The Leftovers (Justin Theroux also was left out).   Snub! Legion What the actual… This FX series was the TV season's most creative new drama and both Dan Stevens and Aubrey Plaza deserved to be recognized for taking big swings in complicated roles. I mean, not even a technical category nomination? (In related news, Mr. Robot also was shut out of the major categories.)   Surprise! Saturday Night Live SNL (and Westworld ) led the tally for the most nominations (22) and claimed a surprising three spots in the Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series category, for the departing Vanessa Bayer, Leslie Jones, and last year's winner, Kate McKinnon. This category is a total shitshow, though. Just a few of the snubs: Rita Moreno, Jane Krakowski, Donna Lynne Champlin.   Surprise! Full Frontal With Samantha Bee Not only was Full Frontal With Samantha Bee nominated for Outstanding Variety Talk Series, along with Bee as host, but the show's Not The White House Correspondents' Dinner special also picked up four nods. All hail Queen Bee. Back to the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category, Jimmy Fallon's bad year just got a little worse; the show was ignored.   Surprise! Jane Fonda, Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series for Grace And Frankie I actually think Fonda's work is more difficult and interesting than fellow nominee Lily Tomlin's, but this still is a pleasant surprise. This category is full of snubs, though. Besides the ladies of The CW, HBO's Issa Rae and Sarah Jessica Parker, Fleabag 's Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and approximately 100 other killer performers were left out.   Snub! Oprah Winfrey, Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie for The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks The HBO film was nominated for Outstanding Television Movie, but Winfrey was rebuffed. Felicity Huffman took the spot instead for American Crime . Winfrey is not crying about this; she has plenty of awards. Still, this makes no sense.   Surprise! Zach Galifianakis, Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series for Baskets While his costar Louie Anderson was a lock in the supporting race, Galifianakis was not. He deserves the nod, though. Emmy love for Baskets is truly a treat.   Bits and pieces: Who would have thought that Alexis Bledel (Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series) would be nominated for an Emmy before Lauren Graham? Mandy Moore was nominated twice, but it was the choreographer , not the actress. The Good Place was incredibly funny and creative, featuring A+ performances by Ted Danson and Kristen Bell, but the show got nada. Another shocker: no Claire Danes. And we got Millie Bobby Brown instead of Winona Ryder. I'm very much here for Ann Dowd's two nominations, however. And finally, in truly 2017 news, Martha Stewart and Snoop Dog were nominated for Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program.   Did your favorite snag a nomination? Who do you think was snubbed? Let us know below!

Saturday Night Lives Momentous Year: An Oral History Of Life Inside The Whirlwind

On the Sunday morning in May after Melissa McCarthy hosted Saturday Night Live for the fifth time, one of those dead-serious Beltway chat shows told a joke. Well, repeated a joke. The night before, Weekend Update co-anchor Colin Jost had summed up a claim by Donald Trump 's attorneys that the President of the United States had received no money from Russian sources, "with a few exceptions." No Sunday pundit could have summed it up better than Jost. "That's like hearing ...Read More... http://deadline.com/2017/06/saturday-night-live-michael-che-colin-jost-mikey-day-donald-trump-emmys-interview-news-1202096488/
