In a small Alpine village, in the shadow of a vast dam, a small group of men, women and children find themselves in a state of confusion, trying to return to their homes. What they do not yet know is that they have been dead for several years, and no one is expecting them back. Their arrival coincides with a series of gruesome murders which bear a chilling resemblance to the work of a serial killer from the past. This is a homecoming like no other. In French with English subtitles.

You'll find that the US version starts off with the same script, just different actors, but if you watch this first (or simultaneously) you'll see the huge difference in the quality of acting and the overall feel of the show. This one is like a fine wine, and the US one is like a decent house wine. Both are good, but you'd obviously rather have the fine wine.

I don't know why Sidereel has named this "The Returned", it's confusing when searching for the US version.. this version should actually be called "Les Revenants", and put the returned in brackets next to the title. It's funny how this ended back in 2012 and NOW have been renewed for a second season since the US version has been aired, 3 years break.. LOL!

The Returned is a poignant dark drama about the unexplained resurrection of a mountain town's dead residents. This French series delivers a profound character driven story without becoming trapped in it's own premise. The acting and audio in this show is so strong that the subtitles become optional. Absolutely brilliant.

Outstanding acting, writing and the most breathtaking and beautiful cinematography I have ever seen, The Returned is as close to perfection as it gets. I have never watched a show with such a compelling atmosphere, beautifully built around a haunting sondtrack (thanks Mogwai!). I'd watch it all over again just for the stunning visuals and cinematography; not since Hannibal have I seen such gorgrous shots of scenery effortlessly capturing the drama. The Returned is a very self contained and character driven series built around excellent performances and focusing on key characters and their reactions to people from a valley town suddenly rising from the dead, ie "The Returned".

The show is a spellbinding, dark, supernatural drama, that slowly reveals key plot points, but the pacing never drags. There are only 16 episodes, so it feels like it goes at quite a pace, but it's very gentle and extremely tense (if that makes sense?). Not all questions posed by the characters are answered by the end, but I think this makes the supernatural elements of the show more powerful and the show is brave enough to let some mysterious just be.

The first season focused on 5 characters who had 'returned' and their families reactions, as well as the townspeople's shock, horror and disbelief at such an occurance. Finding out why the characters return is a partial subplot, the show focuses more on what lead to each characters' original deaths and how they all struggle to fit into the land of the living. The second season goes further into can The Returned survive and live side by side with the living, and ultimately, what started off the chain of events in the first place.

I loved all the main characters, especially once we got to see their backstories in flashbacks and learnt exactly how they came to be where they were. However, Julie and Victor were by far my favourites. They had such a special relationship, that definitely made me cry a fair few times. Although Lena and Camille come a close second, their character arcs beautifully merged and their deep sisterly bond was genuine and powerful throughout the show.

There are some great themes explored throughout the show, loneliness, grief, bereavement, finding your place in the world and coping with life changing events were all to be expected in a supernatural zombie drama. However, in the finale it was clear that "be careful what you wish for" and "you can change things if you really want to enough" played a powerful role in the lives of all The Returned. All of our main Returnees managed to change aspects of their life, because they found a reason/purpose and wanted to make changes badly enough. Always pleasing to see a drama where free will is such an important theme!

There are very few complaints I can make about the show, I rather enjoyed the subtitles and lovely French accents - it added another layer to the show, and the acting was so good you barely needed to use the subtitles. Clairvoyant Lucy and Victor with his second sight are central to the supernatural/fantasy elements of the show and although their powers were shown throughout the series, I would have enjoyed a little more detail on exactly who they are/ their relationship with each other.

Though saying that, would the show's central mystery be as successful if everything was revealed? I'm not sure, but what I do know is The Returned has been an absolutely captivating show. So self contained, but not full of itself. it's not just a super tv series, it is a fine piece of supernatural cinema.

Awesome show. Is the only good show on TV on Saturday for us women. The rest is sports for men. Although some women like sports, I don't , at least not on TV except for boxing. I also watched Resurrection which they also dumped on second season and left a big cliffhanger there, shame on them producers. The Returned is original from France and was also dumped too on the US but Sundance Channel saw a good in it and got it. Thanks to them, we can keep on watching because is very good. It starts again on Oct. 31, 2015. 8 or 9PM not sure of the time but its about a town where dead people are starting to resurrect and coming home and they don't know why. Some think is an alien thing, some demonic thing but nobody knows really why are they coming to live again. Mystery and sci-fi.
