Which TV series will your friends (and the entire internet) be talking about this week? Stay informed—or at least be able to fake it—with SideReel's weekly guide to The Most Important Shows on TV. Ascension (Mini-Series Premiere) Monday at 9:00pm on SyFy Why: Imagine that in 1963, the US launched a covert space mission that sent families on a 100-year transit to a new planet! It's Mad Men ... IN SPACE! With Number 6 from Battlestar Galactica ! You LOVED Battlestar Galactica ! OK, so it's more like a murder happens and everyone's a suspect and dressed like they're in Mad Men in space, but whatever. Besides, it's only three nights, so quit your bellyaching (as I assume they said back in 1963). Prepare to talk about: How you can't believe this is only a six-hour (three-night) miniseries when it clearly has a concept that could have sustained it indefinitely; how it seems unlikely that we could have built a generation ship in 1963 when HDTV hadn't even been invented; how much you miss Battlestar Galactica . The Sing-Off (Special) Wednesday at 9:00pm on NBC Why: Because The Sing-Off really is fun for the whole family (assuming your family likes a cappella)! It features people with genuine talent who are somewhat less egotastic than those on The Voice and American Idol . Plus, it has the most endearing judging panel! Jewel and Shawn Stockman! Everyone loves Jewel and Shawn Stockman! If only Ben Folds had been able to make it back this year. Sigh. Prepare to talk about: How Patrick Stump is NO Ben Folds; how you love a cappella (especially collegiate a cappella... especially the collegiate a cappella group that I was in ); how Jewel has aged amazingly well; how excited you are for Pitch Perfect 2 . The Colbert Report (Series Finale) Thursday at 11:30pm on Comedy Central Why: Really? You really need to know why? OK, here you go: one of the defining shows of the last decade is ending and its host is leaving behind a public persona that has had a measurable effect on US domestic and foreign policy. "Stephen Colbert" testified before Congress! And this is the last time you'll see him before he becomes... Stephen Colbert, Late Show host. Prepare to talk about: How you were too busy crying to have any opinions at all; truthiness. Leah E. Friedman is the editor of SideReel.com. You can follow her musings on Twitter .

Fast National ratings for Monday, Dec. 23, 2013"The Sing-Off" went out on a low note Monday, recording the smallest finale in its four seasons on NBC. It might, however, still end up as the night's top show in adults 18-49.That honor currently belongs to ABC's finale of "The Great Christmas Light Fight" and reruns of "2 Broke Girls" and "Mike & Molly" on CBS. Both of those networks, however, had local pre-emptions for the "Monday Night Football" game, so their ratings may come down in the final nationals. The only other original show on Monday was a special "Hollywood Game Night" on NBC, which finished second in its hour in adults 18-49.ABC currently stands at 5.05 million viewers and a 2.9 rating/5 share in households, pending updates for the NFL pre-emption. CBS (4.9 million, 3.1/5) is second, also pending updates. NBC averaged 4.6 million viewers and a 2.9/5, followed by FOX (2.15 million, 1.4/2) and The... http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2013/12/tv-ratings-the-sing-off-finale-drops-monday-christmas-light-fight-finishes-higher.html
