Bert needs to know the truth from Grace about her feelings for Bill as rumours begin to circulate around the village about them. Bairstow turns his energies towards deflecting attention from the Allingham gamekeeper's attack on John. He manipulates the police into starting an investigation into those behind the protest and accusing them of riot. Bert and Eyre find themselves in the dock. The key witness is George Allingham, who saw them in The Lamb conspiring. In court, it is George's principles that will decide their fate, and his conscience puts him in opposition to his own family.
